Using AI to edit Fusion Projects

Jonas integrates electronics into drones. His startup plan for Fusion expired, and the mechanical files he kept were STEP exports. Now the drone gets a new flight controller and a separate motor driver, and the mounting plate must carry both boards, a battery and a GPS antenna.

He opens the plate in Flux and describes the whole change in one message:

"We are moving this drone to a new flight controller and motor-driver stack. Make the plate 120 x 80 mm, and keep the four M3 holes on the 30.5 x 30.5 mm square where they are. Add weight-saving cutouts in the plate around the stack, and two 20 x 3 mm battery-strap slots. On the four M3 holes, add four 20 mm tall M3 aluminum standoffs. Stack two 36 x 36 mm, 1.6 mm boards on them, with real components: the flight controller on top, with a processor, an IMU and connectors, and the motor driver below it, with power stages and capacitors. Hold the stack with M3 screws and nuts. Add a GPS mast mount at the rear edge of the plate, with a vertical mast and a round GPS puck on top. No part may touch another part except where it is fastened. Check this before you finish. Then export a STEP file."

What Flux built

  • The plate grew from 80 × 80 mm to 120 × 80 mm. The four M3 holes on the 30.5 mm square stayed where they were.
  • Weight-saving cutouts around the stack and two 20 × 3 mm battery-strap slots.
  • Two 36 × 36 mm boards with real components on M3 standoffs: the motor driver below, the flight controller on top, held with M3 screws and nuts.
  • A GPS mast mount at the rear edge, with a vertical mast and a round GPS puck.
Before: flat 80 by 80 mm plate with four holes. After: longer plate with cutouts and strap slots, a two-board stack on four standoffs, and a GPS mast at the rear.

Checked before the handoff

Flux checked all 2,080 part pairs in the assembly. No part touches another part except where it is fastened. The smallest gap between two parts that are not fastened together is 1.1 mm, and the capacitors clear the board above them by 2.2 mm.

Flux then exported the complete assembly as a STEP file and opened it again to check it. In Flux, the change took a few hours. Jonas can send one file to the frame builder, with the boards already in place. Plan your next drone build with Flux.
