Part Datasheet Audit

I’m reading the complete symbol and pad definitions now, including all stored properties, before comparing them to manufacturer data.

Part Datasheet Audit

Part Datasheet Audit Scope
Audit of the Taoglas WLA.01 part metadata, schematic symbol, and footprint against the official Taoglas datasheet.
Authoritative sources Stored part information Key manufacturer specifications
Note: the current Taoglas product webpage contains legacy/marketing values including 2.5 dBi and VSWR 1.5:1, while revision-V PDF reports 1.0 dBi typical and VSWR <2 for the documented reference board. Use the revision-V PDF values for controlled engineering documentation.
Audit complete. The main issues are an incorrect Part Type (“Integrated Circuits”), missing package/description, and symbol pins 4–5 being ordinary unspecified terminals despite being non-functional mechanical lands. The footprint otherwise broadly matches the 3.2 × 1.6 × 0.5 mm package.
The Datasheet property was not changed because it was already populated, although it points to Digi-Key rather than the official Taoglas PDF. Full specifications and findings are in Part Datasheet Audit.

44No named electrical functionMismatch/ambiguity: should be explicitly marked mechanical/no-connect, not represented as an ordinary unspecified electrical terminal
55No named electrical functionMismatch/ambiguity: should be explicitly marked mechanical/no-connect, not represented as an ordinary unspecified electrical terminal
All five project terminals have Pin Type: Unspecified. Pins 1-3 should carry meaningful RF/passive/ground descriptions where supported; pins 4-5 should be clearly documented as no-connect mechanical lands. The symbol currently overstates the electrical pin count unless pins 4 and 5 are explicitly treated as NC/mechanical pads.
Footprint cross-check
The footprint body outline is 3.2 x 1.6 mm and matches the datasheet package dimensions. It contains five physical copper lands:

Table

PadProject geometry (mm)Assessment
1center (-1.8, +0.5), 0.6 x 0.8, rotated 90 degConsistent with RF-feed land
2center (-1.6, -0.5), 0.4 x 0.8Consistent in placement with GND land; verify exact height against Taoglas source CAD because the raster mechanical drawing is easy to misread
3center (+1.6, 0), 0.4 x 1.6Consistent with fine-tuning element land
4center (+2.0, 0), 0.4 x 0.5Physical auxiliary land is plausible; no separate electrical function is defined
5center (+2.45, 0), 0.5 x 0.6Physical auxiliary land is plausible; no separate electrical function is defined
The five-land geometry is compatible with the composite right-side metallization shown in the mechanical drawing, but only pads 1-3 have named electrical functions. Pads 4 and 5 should remain electrically unassigned unless an official Taoglas CAD file explicitly specifies otherwise.
Integration requirements not encoded by the part
  • Route the feed as a controlled 50-ohm RF transmission line.
  • Provide a pi matching network close to the feed.
  • Center-of-long-edge reference layout: all-layer copper keepout approximately 5.4 x 5.0 mm around the antenna and at least 0.1 mm board-edge clearance.
  • Corner reference layout: use the separate approximately 7.7 x 7.7 mm all-layer keepout guidance.
  • Ground-via fencing and host-board ground-plane dimensions materially affect performance.
  • Reference electrical performance was measured on the WLAD.01 evaluation board with an 80 x 40 mm ground plane; final tuning is required on the production enclosure/PCB.
  1. Change Part Type from Integrated Circuits to an antenna/RF antenna category.
  2. Populate Package with Ceramic SMD, 3.2 x 1.6 x 0.5 mm, edge mount or the closest controlled package label.
  3. Add a concise description such as 2.4 GHz ceramic SMD loop antenna, 2400-2500 MHz, 50 ohm, WLAN/Bluetooth/Zigbee.
  4. Replace the distributor Datasheet property with the direct official PDF URL: https://www.taoglas.com/datasheets/WLA.01.pdf. This audit did not change it because the property was already populated and the instruction only requested an update when absent.
  5. Keep functional pins 1-3 as currently named; mark terminals/pads 4 and 5 as mechanical/no-connect rather than unspecified electrical pins.
  6. Confirm pad 2 dimensions against Taoglas source CAD before publishing the footprint as production-verified.
  7. Add antenna placement/keepout guidance to the part or its usage notes so the footprint alone is not mistaken for a complete RF integration solution.
