Part Review Audit

The geometry matches the extracted Kycon dimensions, but the key risk is whether the manufacturer’s bottom-view recommended layout was copied into a top-view footprint. I’m doing one more orientation check before writing the review.

Completed the KCDX-5S-N part review and created the full report here: KCDX-5S-N Part Review.
Open items:
  • Datasheet URL was already populated and official, but the stored value is HTTP; HTTPS is preferred.
  • Symbol metadata is incomplete: pins are Unspecified and lack descriptions.
  • Footprint dimensions/drills match the datasheet, but I flagged a possible handedness risk because the Kycon layout is explicitly “Bottom View” and the footprint appears to follow that same pin order.
Suggested next steps:
  1. Verify footprint handedness against the 3D model or a trusted ECAD source before manufacturing.
  2. Update symbol pin types/descriptions and Part Type metadata.
  3. If handedness is confirmed wrong, mirror/fix the footprint pin geometry.

Schematic Symbol Check
Current schematic representation uses seven standalone terminal entries:
  • Signal terminals: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Mechanical terminals: MH1, MH2
  • All have Pin Type: Unspecified
  • No useful pin descriptions are present

Pin numbers align with datasheet labelsPass for terminal labels
Pin descriptionsMissing
Pin electrical typeWeak / incomplete: all are Unspecified
Mechanical terminals clearly marked as non-signalPartial: named MH1/MH2, but type remains Unspecified
Recommended symbol metadata improvements:
  • Set signal pins 1-5 to Passive / connector-style pin type.
  • Add pin descriptions such as DIN signal pin 1 through DIN signal pin 5.
  • Mark MH1 and MH2 as mechanical/mounting holes or otherwise make clear they are non-signal unless intentionally connected.
  • Set Part Type to Connector.

Extracted pad pattern:

Table

PadFootprint coordinate from assetDatasheet relation
1(0, 0)right outer signal hole in bottom-view drawing
2(-7.5, 0)center signal hole
3(-15, 0)left outer signal hole
4(-2.5, -2.5)right inner staggered signal hole
5(-12.5, -2.5)left inner staggered signal hole
MH1(-2.5, 9.5)one mounting hole
MH2(-12.5, 9.5)second mounting hole
Footprint hole details:
  • Seven through-holes present.
  • Drill diameter is 1.40 mm for all seven holes, matching the datasheet callout 7-Ø1.40.
  • Signal pad copper size is 2.10 mm; mounting pad copper size is 1.86 mm.
  • Signal span pin 3 to pin 1 is 15.00 mm, matching the drawing.
  • Mounting-hole spacing is 10.00 mm, matching the drawing.
  • Stagger and offsets match the extracted 12.5 / 15.0 / 3.0 mm geometry from the recommended PCB layout.

Pin numbering vs datasheet bottom-view drawingMatches the datasheet bottom-view order
Top-view footprint handednessRisk / needs confirmation
Main Risk: Bottom-View Footprint Orientation
The Kycon drawing explicitly labels the recommended PCB layout as Bottom View. The current KiCad-style footprint appears to use the same left-to-right numbering order from that bottom-view drawing: 3, 5, 2, 4, 1.
For a typical through-hole connector mounted on the top/component side, an EDA footprint is normally authored from the top/component view. If the manufacturer's bottom-view pattern was copied directly into a top-view footprint without mirroring, the physical pinout can be reversed left-to-right. In that case, pins 1 and 3 and pins 4 and 5 would be swapped on the assembled board.
This is not proven solely from the available 2D data because the intended mounting side and Flux/KiCad view convention need to be confirmed against the 3D orientation or a known-good ECAD model. However, it is significant enough to flag before manufacturing.
An internal Flux part-quality report was filed for this orientation review.
Verdict
  • Metadata is mostly correct.
  • Datasheet is present and official; HTTPS is preferred.
  • Symbol has correct terminal count and labels, but lacks pin descriptions and useful pin types.
  • Footprint dimensions and drill sizes match the datasheet drawing.
  • The only major functional concern is possible footprint handedness due to the datasheet being a bottom-view layout and the footprint apparently using that same order in a KiCad-style top-view footprint.
  1. Verify footprint handedness against the actual 3D model orientation or a trusted manufacturer/distributor ECAD model before using this part in production.
  2. If mounted on the top side and the current footprint is confirmed to be a direct bottom-view copy, mirror the footprint pin numbering/geometry so the top-view footprint is correct.
  3. Improve symbol metadata: set Part Type to Connector, set pins 1-5 to Passive, and add pin descriptions for all seven terminals.
  4. Prefer updating the Datasheet URL to https://www.kycon.com/Pub_Eng_Draw/KCDX-5S-N.pdf if the part-level property editor supports it.
