Based on the Flux knowledge base, when using the LTC2946 to monitor current you must add an external sense (shunt) resistor between SENSE+ and SENSE–. To pick the right “small SMD” shunt, I need a bit more detail:
  • What’s the maximum current you intend to measure?
  • Do you have a preferred package size (e.g. 1206, 0805, 0603)?
  • Any power-dissipation or accuracy targets (e.g. ≤0.5 W, 1% tolerance)?
With that info I can recommend specific resistor values, wattage ratings and footprints.
