Designing a 5V power supply circuit can be accomplished in many ways, but a commonly used way is using a linear voltage regulator like the LM7805. Here's a simple schematic for a 5V supply using the LM7805 IC:
  1. Add a new component, Designator U1, an LM7805 Voltage Regulator
  • U1 Pins: 1 (Input), 2 (Ground), 3 (Output)
  1. Connect P1 of a 9V battery (or any source greater than 5V but within the operating range of LM7805) to Pin 1 (Input) of U1 using a wire.
  2. Connect Pin 2 (Ground) of U1 to the battery's negative terminal.
  3. Connect Pin 3 (Output)of U1 to where you want the 5V supply.
  4. Add two more capacitors, C3 and C4 with values near 0.1µF and 1µF, respectively. Connect C3 across the input side (between Pin 1 (Input) and Pin 2 (Ground) of U1) and C4 across the output side (between Pin 3 (Output) and Pin 2 (Ground) of U1). These are decoupling capacitors for improving stability and reducing noise.
Note: You need to ensure your input voltage has a higher voltage level than your target 5V. If your source voltage is less than 7V, a voltage booster (step-up converter) may be needed upstream of the LM7805 regulator.
