Table
| Pin Name | Schematic Symbol | Function Description | Input/Output Characteristics & Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| VDD | VDD | Battery Management Input Supply | Input supply for the device. Powers the chip with a recommended voltage range of [VREG(typical)+1V] to 6V. The MCP73831/2 enters power-down mode if VDD falls below the UVLO threshold, thus protecting the battery from being drained. |
| STAT | STAT | Charge Status Output | Outputs the charging status. On the MCP73831 it is a tri-state digital output, while on the MCP73832 it is an open-drain output. It is typically used to drive an LED or interfaced to a microcontroller via a pull-up resistor. |
| PROG | PROG | Current Regulation Set and Charge Control Enable | Used to set the charge current and control the charge cycle. Connecting a resistor from PROG to Vss enables charging; leaving it floating or driving it high disables the device, reducing its supply current to approximately 25 µA. |
| VBAT | VBAT | Battery Charge Control Output | Provides battery detection by sourcing roughly 6 µA. If the voltage at VBAT rises above VREG + 100 mV, the device assumes the battery is not present; if it stays below that threshold, a battery connection is inferred. Note that the VBAT function may be available on more than one pin (depending on the package) to perform battery detection. |
| Vss | Vss | Ground Reference / Battery Management OV Reference | Serves as the ground reference for the device and is used for bypassing and establishing loop stability (with a recommended bypass capacitor of at least 4.7 µF on VDD). |
