@copilot I need help finding a switch that is single pole, quadruple throw. i want to have a selector switch that enables me to turn on different LED circuits from the same power supply.

Finding a switch that precisely matches your specifications, a single pole, quadruple throw (SP4T), can be a bit challenging since it's not as common as other types of switches like SPST, SPDT, or DPDT. However, they do exist and are often referred to as rotary switches. A rotary switch can offer the functionality you're looking for, enabling you to select between four different circuits.
When choosing a rotary switch for your application, consider the following criteria:
  • Current Rating: Ensure the switch can handle the current drawn by your LED circuits. Given your use case, this might not be very high, but it's still important to check.
  • Voltage Rating: Make sure the switch's voltage rating is suitable for your power supply voltage.
  • Size and Mounting Type: The physical size of the switch and its mounting type (PCB mount, panel mount, etc.) should fit your design.
  • Number of Positions: Look for a 4-position rotary switch.
  • Contact Configuration: SP4T as you specified.
  • Durability: Consider the expected life cycle of the switch if your device will be used frequently.
Since I don't have access to a database of electronic parts, I can't recommend a specific model or manufacturer. However, manufacturers such as Grayhill, C&K, and NKK Switches are known for producing high-quality rotary switches. You can find these switches at electronic component distributors like Digi-Key, Mouser, Allied Electronics, or RS Components.
Once you have your switch, integrating it into your project to select between the LED circuits from a single power supply would look something like this:
  • Common Terminal: Connect the common terminal of the SP4T switch to the positive terminal of your power supply.
  • Throw Terminals: Connect each throw terminal on the switch to the series resistor of each LED circuit. For example:
    • Throw 1 to R1(P1)(P1) for RLED3
    • Throw 2 to R2(P1)(P1) for RLED1
    • Throw 3 to R3(P1)(P1) for RLED2
    • Throw 4 to R4(P1)(P1) for RLED4
This setup allows you to select which LED circuit is powered and thus which LED is turned on by rotating the switch to the desired position. The negative terminal of the power supply should be connected to the common ground of the LED circuits.
