On macOS you don’t need to “open” the STEP to turn it into a ZIP—just compress it or rename it. Here are two quick methods:
  1. Finder “Compress”
    • In Finder, locate your MyBoard.step file.
    • Right-click (or Ctrl-click) → Compress “MyBoard.step”.
    • Finder will create MyBoard.step.zip in the same folder.
  2. Terminal zip command
    • Open Terminal (in Applications → Utilities).
    • cd into the folder containing your STEP: 
      Bash
      cd /path/to/your/files
    • Run: 
      Bash
      zip MyBoard.zip MyBoard.step
    • You’ll end up with MyBoard.zip (containing the STEP) without ever opening it.
Either way you get a standard ZIP archive of your .step file without launching a CAD app.
