Project Specification Project Overview
Production-intent industrial ESP32 gateway. Status: Draft / Stage-1 schematic.
Intended Use
DIN-panel or enclosed industrial gateway powered from 12–24 VDC, bridging Ethernet/USB application logic to two independent 2-wire Modbus RTU networks.
What the Device Should Do
  • Run application firmware on ESP32-S3 with Wi-Fi capability.
  • Communicate on two independently isolated half-duplex RS-485 buses.
  • Accept a plug-in W5500 SPI Ethernet module.
  • Support native USB programming/data without USB powering or back-powering the main board.
Main Features
  • ESP32-S3-WROOM-1.
  • Protected 12–24 V input and regulated 3.3 V rail.
  • USB-C device port with CC pulldowns and ESD protection.
  • BOOT and RESET buttons.

The regulator design target is ≥1.2 A usable at 3.3 V; a 2 A-class regulator is preferred for transient and thermal margin.
Input-current reflection
At 12 V minimum input and 88% conservative buck efficiency: I_IN = (3.3 V × 1.125 A) / (12 V × 0.88) = 0.352 A. Allowing startup, capacitor charging, tolerance, and future expansion, size the protected input path and connector for at least 1 A continuous; choose overcurrent protection with appropriate hot-temperature derating.
Voltage and transient assumptions
  • Nominal input: 12–24 VDC.
  • Power-stage parts require margin above 24 V; 50–65 V regulator and input capacitors are preferred.
