1 Hz 555 LED Blinker
Requirements
  • 9V block battery input through an on/off switch.
  • Red LED blinks once per second.
  • Use hand-solderable through-hole components.
Timing calculation
555 astable period:
T = 0.693 × (RA + 2RB) × C
Chosen values:
  • RA = 47 kΩ
  • RB = 47 kΩ
  • C = 10 µF
Calculated period:
  • T = 0.693 × (47k + 2×47k) × 10µF
  • T ≈ 0.977 s
  • Frequency ≈ 1.02 Hz
This meets the once-per-second blink requirement within normal resistor/capacitor tolerances.
LED current limit
For a red LED at about 2V forward voltage from a 9V supply:
I ≈ (9V - 2V) / 680Ω ≈ 10.3 mA
Chosen LED resistor: 680Ω, suitable for a visible indicator and safe for the 555 output.
Hand-solderable component choices
  • 555 timer: DIP-8 through-hole NE555P.
  • Battery input: through-hole 9V battery connector/holder.
  • Switch: through-hole SPST slide switch.
  • LED: 5mm through-hole red LED.
  • Resistors: axial through-hole style.
  • Timing capacitor: through-hole electrolytic/generic capacitor configured as 10µF.
  • Decoupling/control capacitors: through-hole/generic capacitors configured as 100nF and 10nF.
