Data Logger

I’ll finish the remaining schematic wiring, verify the design, and update the key project docs with any open risks or bring-up notes.
Finished the schematic phase: USB-C, CAN/OBD2, RTC/I2C, microSD, UART, ADC, buttons, LED, power, and no-connect handling are wired, and the checked ERC categories are clean.
Created docs:
Open items before layout/manufacturing:
  • Verify OBD2 connector mechanical gender/fit.
  • Review 3.3 V LDO thermals under ESP32 + microSD + WiFi load.
  • Replace/approve the provisional P-channel MOSFET with an automotive-qualified part if robustness matters.
Suggested next steps:
  1. Set board size, stackup, and layout rules.
  2. Place components with automotive/USB/CAN/antenna constraints.
  3. Route the PCB and clear DRC/airwires.
Layout and fixes
Start PCB layout
Verify OBD2 fit
Review LDO thermals
Replace MOSFET

Regulatory and Automotive Notes — ESP32-S3 OBD2 Data Logger
Classification
This is a wireless, vehicle-connected electronics device using an ESP32-S3 WiFi/BLE module and an OBD2/CAN interface. Treat it as a draft hobbyist data logger, not an automotive safety device.
Applicable Compliance Areas
  • FCC/CE/UKCA/ISED intentional radiator rules for WiFi/BLE integration.
  • EMC/ESD immunity expectations for automotive-adjacent use: ISO 7637-style load dump/transient awareness, CISPR 25 emissions awareness.
  • Component qualification review: AEC-Q parts preferred for vehicle power input, TVS/protection, buck converter, CAN transceiver, and passives exposed to vehicle lines.
Current Design Mitigations
  • Vehicle input: fuse/PTC F1, switch SW1, P-channel MOSFET reverse-polarity stage Q1, TVS D1, input filtering L2/C1/C2/C15.
  • CAN: TJA1049T-3 transceiver U4, CAN ESD device D3, 120Ω termination R15.
  • USB: CC pull-downs R3/R4, USBLC6-2SC6 ESD U6, 22Ω D+/D− series resistors R16/R17.
  • Logic: ESP32-S3 module, RTC, microSD, expansion headers all on 3.3 V logic.
Open Items Before Layout/Manufacture
  • Verify ESP32-S3 module pre-certification integration rules, antenna keepout, and enclosure/material assumptions.
  • Replace or approve provisional Q1 with an automotive-qualified P-channel MOSFET if vehicle robustness is required.
  • Confirm OBD2 connector exact mechanical gender/orientation and mounting constraints.
  • Validate 5V→3.3V LDO thermal dissipation; consider a higher-efficiency 3.3 V buck if sustained WiFi + SD load is expected.
  • Add layout-stage requirements: short high-current input loop, TVS near connector, CAN differential routing, USB D+/D− length/impedance care, ESP32 antenna keepout.

Status
Schematic-stage notes only. Final compliance requires layout review, BOM qualification, RF module documentation, and lab testing if the device is sold or used in regulated environments.
