Function: “Feedback Pin for Scaling of VMAG Output Voltage in Measurement Mode. Accepts a set-point voltage in controller mode.”
2. Purpose & Key Functions
Set-Point Control: Internally, the AD8302 establishes a “center-point” voltage (VCP ≈ 900 mV) corresponding to 0 dB gain. MSET lets you override that center-point by injecting your own reference voltage.
Scaling the Gain Output (VMAG):
In measurement mode, MSET works as the feedback node that defines where 0 dB sits on VMAG.
In controller mode, you break the internal VMAG→MSET connection and drive MSET externally to bias an external variable-gain block (e.g., VGA) so that VMAG can be used as an error signal.
Integration & Filtering: The difference between the detector’s internal log-amp current and the set-point current is integrated onto the low-pass filter capacitor at the MFLT pin (Pin 14).
3. Operation Within a Circuit
Measurement Mode
VMAG → MSET loop closed internally.
The detector outputs a DC voltage (VMAG) proportional to the RF input level around that internal set-point.
Frequency Range: Varies from a few hundred MHz up to several GHz.
Dynamic Range vs. Accuracy: Some variants trade range for ±0.2 dB accuracy vs. ±0.5 dB.
6. Common Applications
RF power metering and leveling systems
Automatic gain control (AGC) loops
Phase-locked loops and vector network monitoring
Test and measurement front-ends in microwave receivers
By leveraging the MSET pin, you gain precise control over the AD8302’s magnitude output reference—either calibrating just for measurement or integrating it into an active feedback controller for AGC and phase control.
