On this IDC board, I cannot identify ground by sight because there are no labels like GND / 0V / COM printed beside the connectors. You need to find it with the meter.
Use this method:
Method A: Find ground with power OFF
- Turn machine OFF.
- Set multimeter to continuity / beep.
- Put one probe on a known ground point, such as:
- power supply terminal marked 0V, COM, GND, or V-
- metal chassis only if it is bonded to DC ground
- negative leg of a large electrolytic capacitor on the main board, if you know it
- Touch the other probe to each pin on the IDC board connectors.
The pin that beeps is the IDC ground.
Method B: Use the capacitor on this IDC board
This board has an electrolytic capacitor labeled C2 on the right side. The capacitor can help you find ground.
Electrolytic capacitors usually have a stripe marking the negative side. The negative lead often connects to ground.
So:
- Look at the black capacitor C2.
- Find the side with the stripe / minus marking.
- With power OFF, check continuity from that negative capacitor leg to the connector pins.
- Any connector pin that beeps to the negative capacitor leg is likely ground.
Do not rely only on this until you confirm it with continuity.
Method C: Find it at the sensor connector
Most position sensors use 3 wires:
If the same pin position on all J1-J10 connectors connects together, that common pin is likely GND or V+.
Use continuity mode:
- One pin position will connect to the negative side of C2: likely GND.
- One pin position may connect to the positive side of C2: likely V+.
- The remaining pins are individual sensor signals.
After finding ground
Power ON, set meter to DC volts:
black probe -> ground pin
red probe -> other pins
Expected readings:
V+ pin: steady 5V, 12V, or 24V
signal pin: changes when actuator sensor is triggered
ground pin: 0V
Best first target: use the negative side of capacitor C2 as your ground reference, then verify it connects to one pin on every J connector.
