Buck Converter Design Assistance

I can help design a buck converter, but I can’t execute changes in the project right now because there are no available ACUs.
Nothing has been changed yet: the project is still empty with 0 components and 0 nets.
To design the buck converter correctly, I’ll need these specs:
  • Input voltage range
  • Output voltage
  • Maximum output current
  • Switching frequency preference, if any
  • Efficiency/size/cost priority
  • Whether this is for battery, USB, or another power source
  • Any preferred regulator IC or manufacturer
Once ACUs are available, I can select a suitable buck regulator, add the schematic with the inductor, diode or synchronous FETs, feedback resistors, input/output capacitors, protection parts, and then verify the design against the datasheet.
Input is 12V, output 5V, max current 2A, prioritize low cost.
Got it: 12 V input → 5 V output at 2 A, low-cost priority.
I still can’t modify the project because there are no available ACUs, so the schematic remains empty. Once ACUs are available, I would design this as a low-cost asynchronous buck converter, likely using a common regulator such as LM2596S-5.0 or an equivalent 3 A buck IC, with:
  • 12 V input connector
  • 5 V / 2 A output connector
  • Buck regulator IC
  • Inductor sized for ≥2 A output current
  • Schottky catch diode rated above load current
  • Input and output capacitors per datasheet
  • Feedback network if using adjustable version
  • Basic input protection if desired
For a cost-focused design, I’d prefer a fixed-5 V buck regulator if available, because it reduces component count and avoids feedback resistor tolerance issues.
