state machine with 3 inputs
2y
Designing a state machine with three inputs can be realized using a sequence of SN74LS76AN J-K Flip-Flops in your design. These are dual J-K flip-flops with preset and clear. We can interpret these inputs as binary to represent up to 8 states (since $2^3=8$). Here’s a basic example of implementation:
  1. Firstly, set up each flip-flop (U1, U2, and U3 in your project) as a state register. This becomes your state memory, storing the current state of the machine.
  2. Connect the J and K inputs of each flip-flop to appropriate logic gates. The logic for this stage would depend on the specific state sequence you wish to implement. Also, connect the Preset (SD) and Clear (CD) inputs appropriately to initialize and reset the state machine.
  3. Connect the clock pulse (CP) of each flip-flop together to ensure they change state simultaneously. The CP pin is responsible for transitioning the state based on the J and K inputs.
  4. The Q outputs of each flip-flop represent the output of the state machine.
Remember:
  • The SD and CD pins are active low. Therefore, to keep the flip-flop operational, connect these pins to HIGH (logic 1).
  • J and K inputs should be used to set the required state logic, according to your specific state sequence.
  • The Q outputs represents the current state of the flip flop and can be used as output or to feed into the next state transition.
Here's an approximate wiring for a 3-bit counter, for instance:
  1. Connect U1 CP (U1:0) to your clock source.
  2. Connect U1, U2 and U3 SD (U1:1, U2:1, U3:1) and CD (U1:2, U2:2, U3:2) pins each to VCC (meaning higher voltage, e.g. 5V).
  3. Connect U1, U2, U3 J (U1:3, U2:3, U3:3) and K (U1:15, U2:15, U3:15) to GND (0V or logic 0).
  4. U1 Q (U1:9) will be the first bit, U2 Q (U1:10) will be the second bit, and U3 Q (U3:9) will be the third bit of the output.
This sequence will cause the state machine to act as a 3-bit binary counter, advancing one state with each clock pulse.
Please specify the state sequence, and the inputs you want so that we can make the appropriate changes to this configuration.
