Do you have an example of what it was able to process?

We will use software defined radio/receiver (SDR device) to convert the received signal so that a computer or rpi can process it.

If you're located in the US, there's GOES satellite. If you're in Asia or Australia, there's GK-2A (Geokompsat 2A). These are geostationary satellite so they always stay at a fixed point in the sky. You need https://www.dishpointer.com/ in order to know exactly where to point your antenna from your location.

But an ordinary wideband low noise amplier has proven to work also.

The satellite signal is very weak so the first stage here is to increase the received signal thus a (LNA) low noise amplifier is really needed. Nooelec offers a LNA that comes with built in SAW filter, it only amplifies the signal at a designed frequency section.

The main hardware components which make up a GK-2A or GOES receiver are a parabolic dish antenna with reasonable gain at 1.7 GHz, a low-noise amplifier and a software defined radio (SDR). The Airspy Mini, Airspy R2 and RTL-SDR (also available at NooElec) are all compatible with GK-2A or GOES receiver software. NooElec offers an excellent low-noise amplifier solution which also includes a SAW filter centered on 1688 MHz.
