  • The Raspberry Pi 4 is the dominant 5 V load; attached I2C modules and the HAT add margin-dependent load.
  • External 12 V LED power is not generated from or carried by the 5 V input path.

Because the user requires a 3 A path, all series protection, connectors, vias, and copper between the terminal and Raspberry Pi 5 V pins must be rated for at least 3 A with low voltage drop. Paralleled terminal contacts and both Raspberry Pi 5 V pins should share current through short, wide copper or a pour.
Layout Requirement
  • Size the 5 V and ground copper using the actual stackup and copper weight.
  • Prefer solid pours over long narrow traces.
  • Avoid a high-resistance PTC in series with the Pi unless its hot resistance and voltage drop are acceptable at load.
  • Validate temperature rise and input voltage at the Pi under a 3 A load before release.
