Access Reader Design

Pick-and-Place.

Factory-Ready Execution Strategy - Access Reader
User Direction
Build autonomously toward files that can be sent to a factory for PCBA/manufacturing. Keep the hardware compact, easy to implement and avoid fragile/complex processes where practical.
Engineering Interpretation
A first-pass board can be made factory-orderable, but a complete commercial access-control product still needs enclosure fit, RF antenna validation, firmware hardening and regulatory lab tests. To maximize first-pass success, Rev A will prioritize proven modules and simple supply/protection circuits over custom RF/PoE complexity.
Rev A Simplification Decisions

Table

AreaDecisionReason
ESP32Use ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N16R2 moduleCertified RF module, no bare RF design
PoEPrefer ready isolated PoE 5 V module or proven PD module footprint over discrete flybackReduces isolation/layout/control-loop risk
QRUse GM861-class scanner as a module via board connectorAvoid optical/mechanical sensor design on PCB
13.56 MHz NFCKeep CLRC663-plus path only if library/datasheet/antenna support is adequate; otherwise use module connector for EVTReduces antenna-tuning risk for first PCBA
125 kHz LFPrefer coil connector and tuning placeholdersAllows production tuning without respinning PCB
RelaysUse 5 V Form C relays with simple MOSFET drivers and suppression footprintsReliable, easy to debug, dry-contact output
External I/OUse terminal blocks and protection per portFactory-friendly and robust for installers
PCB4-layer board, top components preferred, inner GND/power planesBetter EMI and simpler routing than 2-layer
SKUBuild one PCB with DNP options only where safe; avoid dual-input auto-selection unless necessaryReduces backfeed and assembly mistakes
Manufacturing Package Target
The target output package will include:
  • Gerber/drill files for PCB fabrication.
  • BOM with MPNs and notes for module/DNP/manual items.
  • Pick-and-place/CPL file for SMT assembly.
  • Assembly notes and bring-up/test plan.
  • Firmware starter and pin map.
  • Known limitations and tests the factory or lab must perform.
Non-Negotiable Reality Checks
  • RF read distance and NFC/LF tuning cannot be guaranteed purely from CAD files; Rev A must include tuning options and test pads.
  • PoE isolation must be checked in layout and by the chosen module/datasheet; no ad-hoc isolation assumptions.
  • Regulatory approval cannot be produced by EDA export alone; documents can be prepared, but lab reports require physical prototypes.
  • If a required MPN is not available in the Flux library and no reliable replacement exists, the design will use a connector/module interface or a documented equivalent rather than inventing a placeholder.
Execution Flow
  1. Source parts and pick the simplest manufacturable option for each block.
  2. Create GPIO allocation and update firmware pin map.
  3. Build schematic block-by-block and run ERC after each major phase.
  4. Size and lay out 4-layer PCB with RF/PoE keepouts.
  5. Route, DRC, fix, and export.
  6. Create final manufacturing/readiness report with all files and caveats.
