5 V ↔ 3.3 V level shifting
- The Pico’s GPIO are not 5 V-tolerant, yet your sensor’s TX line will swing to 5 V.
- How would you shift that 5 V signal down to 3.3 V?
- Option A: simple resistor divider
- Option B: MOSFET-based bidirectional level shifter (e.g. BSS138 + pull-ups)
- Option C: dedicated level-translator IC (e.g. TXB0108)
- Which approach makes the most sense for your skill level and board space?
Sensor current draw & decoupling
- Do you know how much current the c4001 sensor consumes at 5 V?
- That number determines:
- The size of your decoupling/bulk caps
- Whether the Pico’s onboard regulator (fed from 5 V into VSYS) can supply enough current
- The base-resistor choice on Q1 to switch the relay reliably
