Raspberry Pi Project Help

For a Raspberry Pi 4 USB‑C power input using STUSB1602A, connect the USB‑C CC pins to the STUSB1602A, not with simple 5.1kΩ pull-downs. The 5.1kΩ Rd resistors are only for a plain sink port when no Type‑C controller is handling CC; controller ICs such as STUSB1602A handle CC internally/actively .
Basic connection:

Text

USB-C receptacle              STUSB1602A
----------------              ----------
CC1  ----------------------->  CC1
CC2  ----------------------->  CC2

VBUS ----------------------->  VBUS sense / power-path input
GND  ----------------------->  GND
Shield ----------------------> Chassis/GND via ESD strategy
For a Pi 4 power input:

Text

USB-C VBUS
   |
   +-- TVS to GND
   |
   +-- low-R protection / load switch / current-limit switch
   |
   +-- 5V rail to Raspberry Pi 4 5V pins
Key notes:
  • Do not tie CC1 and CC2 together.
  • Do not add external 5.1kΩ CC pull-downs unless the STUSB1602A datasheet/reference design specifically calls for them.
  • The Pi 4 needs a robust 5V / ~3A path, so avoid high-resistance fuses or diode drops that pull VBUS below the Pi’s acceptable input range.
  • If you are only making a Pi HAT powered by the Pi’s 40-pin header, you usually don’t need the STUSB1602A at all.
  • If your board is intended to power the Pi from USB‑C, use the STUSB1602A to detect/handle Type‑C current capability, then gate/protect VBUS before feeding the Pi. USB‑C without PD can advertise up to 3A at 5V, but the design must read/handle CC current advertisement rather than blindly drawing 3A .
So the short answer: USB‑C CC1 → STUSB1602A CC1, USB‑C CC2 → STUSB1602A CC2, no tying together, no standalone Rd resistors unless the STUSB1602A reference circuit says so.
