# Stack Overflow for Hardware Engineering: Ask AI Inside Your Design

Hardware engineering needs more than a question forum. Ask Flux inside your project to read the schematic, PCB, and mechanical design, then make the change.

The replacement for Stack Overflow in hardware engineering is an AI engineer inside your design. Ask Flux in your project. It reads your schematic, PCB layout, and datasheets, works with your mechanical parts and assemblies, and makes the change. The answer becomes part of the device, not another browser tab.

Stack Overflow taught a generation to code by asking strangers. Hardware never had that. Now the engineer who answers can see your actual schematic!

## Stack Overflow is gone. The habit has moved.

On October 29, 2026, the Hacker News discussion [“StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month”](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50282454) drew 811 points and 731 comments. A site built on questions became the subject of one big question: where did everyone go?

Software builders moved from asking strangers to asking AI.

Stack Overflow turned someone else's solved problem into your next working function. That was powerful. Now you ask inside the project, with the code already there. The distance between a question and a change disappears.

Hardware never had a version of that which worked for the whole device.

## A screenshot is not a device

Post a photo of a board. Add a schematic screenshot. Get “check your decoupling.” Then explain the power supply, the load, the trace, and the part you actually used. The person answering is trying to reconstruct a design they cannot see.

Mechanical questions hit the same wall. A picture of a bracket does not show its load path. A rendering of a moving assembly does not explain its bearing fits, joint clearances, or the force on its mounting points. The answer depends on the geometry and the job that geometry must do.

The problem isn't a shortage of helpful people. It's that the design is missing from the conversation.

Electronics forums, mechanical forums, firmware discussions, and manufacturing advice live in separate places. Your device does not. The board heats the mechanical assembly. The assembly sets the connector position. The motor load sets the current the board must deliver.

## The chips got cheap. The knowledge stayed expensive.

Another Hacker News story makes the point: [“SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller.”](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50236681) The chip is cheap. Knowing how to use it is the barrier.

Computer vision needs more than a processor. It needs firmware that uses the processor well, a board that powers it, and an optical assembly that holds the lens where it belongs. It needs a rigid mount that keeps the view stable and a thermal path that carries heat away. Then someone has to manufacture the complete device.

Access to parts isn't access to engineering. That is the wall AI takes down.

## The engineer belongs inside the project

Flux is an AI hardware engineer for complete devices: electronics, mechanical design, firmware, and manufacturing. You ask inside the project. Flux reads the schematic, PCB layout, and datasheets. It works with the mechanical parts and assemblies. Then it does the work.

“Move the connector 5mm.”

That isn't just a copper edit. The connector has to meet the mating part. The mounting geometry has to leave room for the cable. Ask Flux to move the connector, update the PCB routing, and change the mating mechanical features in the same project.

Ask it to check the regulator against the load and change the power circuit. Ask it to strengthen a robot arm bracket, change the bearing support, or check the deflection of a mounting plate. These are engineering changes, not forum replies.

The point isn't a chatbot next to CAD. It's an engineer working on the device with you. The conversation and the work stay together, across the electronics and the mechanics.

That also changes what we should judge. Not how convincing the answer sounds. Whether the device works when it gets built. ## From answers to atoms

This opens hardware to millions of new builders. A professional team can turn product knowledge into a complete device without first becoming the expert in every engineering discipline. Describe the job. Ask the question. Direct the change in the actual design.

The last revolution gave everyone the power to create in bits.

This one gives everyone the power to create in atoms!

## FAQ

### What is the alternative to Stack Overflow for hardware engineering?

Ask an AI hardware engineer inside your project. Flux reads the schematic, PCB layout, and datasheets, works with the mechanical design, and makes changes to the device instead of giving you a detached forum answer.

### Why does AI need access to the actual hardware design?

Hardware answers depend on the parts, connections, routed copper, geometry, and loads in the device. Access to the project lets Flux work from that design rather than reconstruct it from a photo or screenshot.

### Does Flux design mechanical parts as well as PCBs?

Yes. Flux designs mechanical parts and assemblies, including brackets, bearing supports, moving mechanisms, and robot arms. Electronics, mechanical design, firmware, and manufacturing belong to the same complete-device workflow.

### How do I ask Flux a hardware engineering question?

Open your Flux project and ask in the chat. Describe the question or the change you want. Flux uses the project design and datasheets to answer and do the engineering work in that project.
