Routing traces and connecting components is only part of PCB design. The finished board must also tolerate its operating voltage and current, fit real component packages, [remain manufacturable](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/pcb-design-for-manufacturability-dfm) within fabrication tolerances, survive assembly, and meet the required level of reliability and workmanship. Without defined criteria for factors such as electrical clearance, copper temperature rise, component land patterns, drilling, soldering, and inspection, a design that works in an EDA tool may still be difficult to manufacture or fail to meet the product’s requirements.

**IPC standards provide a common framework for defining and verifying these requirements.** Designers, fabricators, assemblers, and customers use them to communicate expectations and reduce ambiguity.

However, IPC is not one universal PCB rulebook. Different documents address different stages of the product lifecycle, including PCB design, bare-board fabrication, electronic assembly, soldering, inspection, and final acceptance. Some guide designers in defining features such as conductor geometry, spacing, land patterns, board construction, and documentation, while others define fabrication performance, soldering processes, or acceptance criteria.

This guide explains the IPC standards PCB designers encounter most frequently and how they fit together.

## What Are IPC Standards?

IPC (originally the Institute for Printed Circuits) is an electronics-industry standards organization that develops requirements and guidance covering:

- printed boards,
- electronic assemblies,
- materials,
- manufacturing processes,
- documentation,
- and quality.

An IPC standard is not automatically a legal requirement for every PCB. It becomes binding when a customer, contract, drawing, certification program, or internal engineering process requires compliance. **For example, an aerospace or defense customer may specify an IPC standard and performance class in a purchase order, an automotive or medical-device manufacturer may impose IPC requirements through its supplier specifications or quality system, or a company may require particular IPC standards through its own engineering and manufacturing procedures.**

Manufacturer capabilities also matter. A board may satisfy a general IPC recommendation but still exceed a particular fabricator’s spacing or drilling capabilities. Conversely, a fabricator may support geometries that require more detailed engineering than a generic table provides.

PCB designers should therefore use three sources together:

1. Applicable IPC standards
2. Component and material specifications from sources such as component datasheets, package drawings, laminate manufacturers, and material suppliers
3. The selected manufacturer’s design rules

IPC maintains an official collection of [PCB design standards](https://www.ipc.org/ipc-board-design-standards) and a [document revision table](https://www.ipc.org/ipc-document-revision-table). Check the current revision before treating a document number or requirement as authoritative.

### How to Select the Applicable PCB Standards

Start with requirements imposed on the product rather than selecting IPC documents in isolation. A practical order is:

1. Identify contractual, regulatory, and product-specific requirements. These may specify particular IPC documents, performance classes, or separate standards from organizations such as IEC, UL, ISO, or an industry-specific standards body.
2. Determine the PCB technology, such as rigid, flex, [rigid-flex](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/rigid-flex-pcb-design), or high-density interconnect (HDI), and select the corresponding IPC design standards.
3. Identify standards that address specific design questions, such as conductor current capacity or surface-mount land patterns.
4. Determine the required fabrication, assembly, soldering, and acceptance standards and the applicable IPC performance class.
5. Compare those requirements with the component manufacturers’ recommendations and the PCB fabricator and assembler’s capabilities before releasing the design.

A product may therefore be subject to IPC requirements and another standards framework at the same time. Notably, one set does not automatically replace the other. If two applicable standards specify different requirements, first determine whether the contract, product specification, or regulatory framework establishes precedence. Where both apply, the design must satisfy both requirements unless they conflict; an actual conflict should be resolved with the customer, certification body, or responsible engineering authority rather than by arbitrarily choosing one requirement.

## IPC-2221: General PCB Design Requirements

IPC-2221 is the generic standard for printed-board design. IPC released IPC-2221C in late 2023, according to its [recently released standards listing](https://www.ipc.org/recently-released-ipc-standards-and-documents). The “C” identifies revision C of IPC-2221. It supersedes IPC-2221B, so documentation should identify the applicable revision when requirements depend on a specific edition.

The standard addresses broad design considerations such as:

- Material selection
- Board construction
- Electrical spacing
- Conductor routing
- Holes and interconnections
- Testability
- Thermal management
- Documentation
- Design verification

IPC-2221 provides the common foundation, but it is normally used with a sectional standard appropriate to the board technology.

Examples include:

- **IPC-2222:** Rigid organic printed boards
- **IPC-2223:** Flexible and rigid-flex printed boards
- **IPC-2226:** High-density interconnect boards

A designer creating a conventional rigid PCB may reference IPC-2221 for generic principles and IPC-2222 for technology-specific requirements such as rigid-board construction, conductor and spacing features, [holes and vias](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/pcb-via-types-guide), annular rings, and other physical design considerations specific to rigid printed boards.

IPC-2221 should not be interpreted as a substitute for engineering analysis. Clearance, for example, depends on voltage, environment, altitude, contamination, coating, material, and regulatory requirements. High-voltage equipment may also need to comply with product-specific safety standards.

## IPC-2152: PCB Trace Current Capacity

IPC-2152 addresses current-carrying capacity in printed-board conductors.

Designers commonly use it when selecting a [trace width](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/high-current-pcb-design) for power, motor, battery, heater, or LED circuits. The relationship is not determined by current alone. Relevant factors include:

- Copper thickness
- Trace width
- Allowable temperature rise
- Internal or external placement
- Nearby copper
- Board construction
- Thermal conductivity
- Ambient conditions
- Copper planes and heat spreading

This is why asking, “What trace width do I need for 2 A?” does not have a universal answer.

A narrow trace may carry the current electrically but become too hot. A wider trace or copper pour reduces resistance and temperature rise. Thermal vias can also help distribute heat between layers.

IPC-2152 replaced older simplified assumptions with more detailed empirical data. Even so, the calculation remains a design estimate. Critical systems may require simulation, prototypes, temperature measurements, and derating.

When configuring trace widths in an EDA tool, define separate rules for low-current signals and power nets. Do not route every connection using one default width.

## IPC-7351: Surface-Mount Land Patterns

IPC-7351 provides requirements and guidance for surface-mount land-pattern design.

A land pattern includes more than exposed copper pads. It can affect:

- Solder-joint geometry
- Component clearances
- Courtyard dimensions
- Solder-mask openings
- Paste apertures
- Assembly inspection
- Rework access
- Manufacturing tolerances

The purpose is to create pads that accommodate the component termination and the realities of fabrication and assembly. IPC-7351 includes considerations for solder fillets, tolerances, adjacent components, testing, and rework. The official [IPC-7351 scope](https://www.ipc.org/TOC/IPC-7351.pdf) describes land geometries intended to provide appropriate solder-joint area while supporting inspection, testing, and rework.

A [footprint copied from an unknown library](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/pcb-footprint-design-guide) should not be trusted solely because its package name looks correct. Confirm:

- The exact package variant
- Lead pitch and dimensions
- Pin numbering
- Thermal-pad dimensions
- Manufacturer-recommended land pattern
- Solder-mask approach
- Paste-layer segmentation
- Courtyard and assembly clearances

IPC has also released IPC-7352, a newer generic guideline for land pattern design, so confirm whether your customer or fabricator specifies IPC-7351 or IPC-7352.

For unusual packages, the component manufacturer’s recommended footprint may take priority over a generic library pattern.

## Other Important IPC Standards for Fabrication, Assembly, and Documentation

PCB design standards are only one part of the IPC framework. Other documents address how the bare board is fabricated and evaluated, how components are soldered and assembled, and how design data is transferred to manufacturing.

| **Standard** | **Primary Purpose** |
| --- | --- |
| IPC-2222 | Design of rigid organic printed boards |
| IPC-2223 | Design of flexible and rigid-flex boards |
| IPC-2226 | Design of high-density interconnect boards |
| IPC-6012 | Qualification and performance requirements for rigid boards |
| IPC-A-600 | Acceptability of fabricated printed boards |
| IPC-A-610 | Acceptability of electronic assemblies |
| J-STD-001 | Requirements for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies |
| IPC-2581 | Intelligent data exchange between design and manufacturing systems |
| IPC-2614 | Printed-board fabrication documentation |
| IPC-4101 | Base materials for rigid and multilayer boards |

These documents serve different roles.

IPC-A-600 focuses on the acceptability of the bare fabricated board. IPC-A-610 addresses the completed electronic assembly. J-STD-001 defines soldering materials, processes, and workmanship requirements rather than simply showing acceptance examples.

IPC-6012 is commonly used to specify the expected performance of rigid printed boards. A fabrication drawing may identify the applicable performance class and any additional requirements.

## IPC Product Classes

IPC requirements are often associated with three broad product classes:

- **Class 1:** General electronic products
- **Class 2:** Dedicated-service electronic products
- **Class 3:** High-performance or harsh-environment products where continued operation is critical

A higher class is not automatically “better” for every product. It generally brings stricter requirements, additional inspection, tighter process controls, and higher cost. The classes are not separate sets of IPC standards, nor does selecting Class 3 simply mean that more standards apply. Instead, the product’s technology and manufacturing process determine which IPC standards are relevant, and the selected performance class determines the applicable class-specific criteria within standards that use those classifications. For example, fabrication and assembly standards may specify different acceptance limits for Classes 1, 2, and 3.

The standards and product class should therefore be considered together rather than selected independently. First determine which standards govern the board design, fabrication, and assembly; then apply the required class wherever those standards distinguish between performance classes. Some IPC concepts, such as the producibility levels used in PCB design guidance, are separate from the Class 1, 2, and 3 performance classification and should not be treated as equivalent.

A low-cost consumer accessory and an aerospace control system should not be specified identically. Select the class based on reliability needs, operating environment, contractual requirements, and the consequences of failure.

## How to Apply IPC Standards in a PCB Workflow

Start by identifying the product requirements before drawing the board:

- Operating voltage and current
- Environment and temperature range
- Reliability expectations
- Board technology
- Assembly process
- Applicable regulations
- Manufacturing partner

Next, translate the requirements into design rules:

- Minimum electrical clearances
- Trace widths
- Via dimensions
- [Differential-pair geometry](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/differential-pair-routing)
- Board-edge clearances
- Component spacing
- Solder-mask rules
- Annular-ring requirements

Then verify footprints against component documentation and the relevant land-pattern guidance.

In Flux, design rules can be applied to nets, traces, components, and other layout objects. This makes it possible to encode [manufacturing constraints](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/pcb-design-constraints) into the design rather than relying on memory during final review. Flux’s documentation describes rules for properties including trace widths, clearances, and keepouts in its [layout-rules guide](https://docs.flux.ai/reference/pcb-rules).

Before release:

1. Run electrical and design-rule checks.
2. Review high-current and high-voltage areas separately.
3. Confirm each critical footprint.
4. Validate fabrication notes with the manufacturer.
5. Review assembly requirements with the assembler.
6. Save the applicable standard revision in the project documentation.
