## Quick answer

Choose an NPN bipolar junction transistor (BJT) when a controller should pull a load toward ground: general-purpose input/output (GPIO)-driven LEDs, relays, buzzers, and other low-side switches are common applications. Choose a PNP transistor when a load must be switched from its positive rail and the required current, voltage, and base drive fit a BJT. In industrial sensors, “NPN” normally means a sinking output and “PNP” a sourcing output, but the programmable logic controller (PLC) input circuit determines the correct wiring. For higher current or efficiency-sensitive switching, compare a suitably driven metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor ([MOSFET](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/nmos-vs-pmos)) before committing to either BJT.

NPN and PNP describe BJT layer polarity. Base current controls collector-emitter current. NPN switches commonly connect loads to ground and PNP switches to the positive rail. For PLC sensors, sinking and sourcing describe output-current direction.

## NPN vs PNP BJT comparison

| Characteristic | NPN | PNP | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Majority carriers** | Electrons | Holes | NPN devices are often the natural default for low-side switching, but selection still comes from the datasheet and circuit requirements. |
| **Conventional current** | Enters collector and leaves emitter in normal operation | Enters emitter and leaves collector in normal operation | Current direction sets supply, load, and protection-diode orientation. |
| **Turn-on polarity** | Base must be above emitter | Base must be below emitter | The controller must create the required base-emitter voltage under worst-case rail and logic conditions. |
| **Common switch position** | Low side | High side | NPN switching is usually simpler from ground-referenced logic; PNP high-side drive becomes awkward when its emitter rail exceeds the logic rail. |
| **Logic action** | A positive base drive usually turns the load on | Pulling the base downward usually turns the load on | PNP stages are commonly active-low and may need an NPN level-shift stage. |
| **Off-state reference** | Base held near emitter, usually ground | Base held near emitter, usually the positive rail | A defined base-emitter pull resistor prevents floating or accidental turn-on. |
| **Industrial sensor output** | Usually sinks input current | Usually sources input current | PLC input common and current direction must match the sensor output. |
| **Analog use** | Common-emitter stages, current sinks, differential and push-pull stages | Current sources, high-side stages, complementary push-pull | In analog work the transistor normally operates in the active region rather than as a saturated switch. |

The schematic arrow is on the emitter: NPN points outward and PNP points inward.

## Choose NPN when

- A 3.3 V or 5 V GPIO must switch a ground-referenced LED string, relay, buzzer, or small solenoid.
- The load stays tied to its positive supply and tolerates a low-side switched return.
- You need an open-collector signal that pulls a correctly chosen local pull-up low.
- A 24 V NPN proximity sensor must feed a compatible sourcing PLC input or an isolated interface.
- You need a current sink or common-emitter analog stage.
- A conventional complementary class-B/AB emitter-follower needs the NPN upper device: its collector is at the positive rail, its emitter drives the output, and it sources conventional current to the load. An emitter follower differs from an NPN common-emitter low-side switch, which sinks current.

## Choose PNP when

- The load must keep its ground connection and be switched from a positive rail.
- A sensor rail, analog block, or small load needs a simple high-side disconnect.
- A 24 V PNP proximity sensor must drive a compatible sinking PLC input.
- A conventional complementary class-B/AB emitter-follower needs the PNP lower device: its collector is at the negative or lower rail, its emitter drives the output, and it sinks conventional current from the load.
- The emitter rail is low enough that the controller can safely pull the base below it, or a level-shift stage is included.
- The required continuous base current and saturation loss are acceptable compared with a P-channel MOSFET or load-switch IC.

## Design considerations

### Base current: active gain is not a saturation guarantee

Base current () controls collector current (). Active-region gain () estimates amplifier bias, but saturated switching requires the manufacturer’s saturation-test conditions.

**1\. Estimate active-region drive.** For an active-region estimate, start with at the stated test point. It does not guarantee a saturated switch: design saturation from the manufacturer’s tested ratio and maximum (collector-emitter) and (base-emitter) voltages.

The relay example below checks both estimates and GPIO limits.

**Example assumptions:** onsemi [2N3904TFR](https://www.flux.ai/adrian95/2n3904tfr~zdc), 50 mA relay-coil current, a 3.3 V microcontroller (MCU) whose minimum high-output voltage, , is assumed to be 2.9 V at the required source current, and a 5% base resistor. The transistor datasheet gives at , so the initial active-region estimate is , implying about .

**2\. Size the base resistor for saturation.** The active-region estimate is insufficient for guaranteed switching. The same datasheet tests saturation at (a forced beta of 10) with and . The resistor must therefore satisfy .

**3\. Check resistor tolerance.** A 360 Ω, 5% resistor is 378 Ω at its high limit, producing at least 5.16 mA under these assumptions. The calculation checks the minimum base current only.

**4\. Check maximum drive current and resistor power.** Maximum GPIO current occurs with the resistor at its low tolerance, the GPIO near its highest driven voltage, and at its minimum: . Because the cited datasheet does not specify at that operating point, obtain a valid bound or verify a conservative assumption. Then confirm per-pin and aggregate MCU current limits, recheck at the actual higher current, and rate R1 from with suitable margin. Confirming only 5.16 mA source capability is insufficient.

### Saturation, headroom, and heat

Saturation minimizes the collector-emitter voltage drop. That drop reduces load-voltage headroom and causes heating.

A saturated BJT still has , which subtracts from load voltage. Estimate dissipation as , then check temperature rise for the package, copper, ambient, and duty cycle.

Absolute maximum collector current, voltage, or power dissipation is a damage boundary, not a recommended working rating. For example, the onsemi 2N3904 family listing gives 40 V , 200 mA continuous collector current, and 625 mW for the TO-92 device at 25°C with derating above 25°C. Do not design a product to sit on those limits.

### High-side PNP from 3.3 V logic

An NPN stage level-shifts 3.3 V MCU drive for a higher-voltage PNP.

A PNP emitter tied to a rail above 3.3 V cannot usually be driven safely by connecting its base directly to a GPIO. A GPIO high may still be far below the emitter, so the PNP stays on. Current can also back-power the MCU through protection structures, and excessive reverse base-emitter voltage can damage the transistor.

**Connect the level-shifted stage as follows:**

1. PNP emitter to the higher rail, PNP collector to the load, and load to ground.
2. Pull-up resistor from PNP base to emitter, with a series resistor from PNP base to the NPN collector.
3. NPN emitter to ground and MCU GPIO through a base resistor to the NPN base. Connect all non-isolated grounds. Budget PNP base current using the voltage across its series resistor, approximately . Also verify the NPN’s , current, pulse power, off-state leakage, and the PNP’s base-current and reverse-junction limits.

**Illustrative rail example:** at 12 V, derive PNP base current from its tested forced beta, then calculate the series resistor from worst-case rail, maximum , and maximum NPN . Check package power against the real load current.

### Inductive loads and flyback

Relays and solenoids store energy in their coils. Interrupting coil current can create a damaging voltage spike, so a flyback diode provides a discharge path.

For an NPN low-side relay, where the transistor switches the coil’s ground connection, connect the flyback diode across the coil with anode at the transistor collector/switched-low node and cathode at the positive supply. For a PNP high-side switch feeding a load that returns to ground, connect the diode with anode at ground and cathode at the switched output. The diode must withstand the supply voltage and initial recirculation current. A plain diode gives a slower release than a higher-voltage clamp or diode-plus-[Zener](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/what-is-a-zener-diode-an-essential-breakdown) network. See [Flux’s flyback diode guide](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/understanding-the-flyback-diode-your-essential-guide-to-functionality-and-why-you-need-one).

### Complementary push-pull is not two ideal rail switches

A complementary push-pull stage uses an NPN and a PNP to drive opposite signal polarities. Their handoff causes possible crossover distortion.

An unbiased complementary emitter follower has crossover deadband. Bias reduces distortion but introduces temperature, drive, and shoot-through concerns. The output also falls short of ideal rail-to-rail operation. Check base current, dissipation, safe operating area, and thermal coupling.

### When to use a MOSFET instead

A BJT needs continuous base current, whereas a MOSFET mainly needs gate charge during transitions. Compare BJT loss with MOSFET at actual drive and temperature. Threshold voltage does not mean fully enhanced, so use guaranteed conditions. Prefer the option with acceptable loss, drive current, heat and cost. See [Flux’s MOSFET basics guide](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/understanding-the-fundamentals-mosfet-basics-for-beginners).

## Reference-circuit starting points

The circuits require verification before fabrication.

### Minimal NPN low-side relay driver

An NPN low-side driver switches relay-coil current while the contacts control another circuit.

**Assumptions:** 3.3 V MCU, 5 V relay coil drawing 50 mA, onsemi [2N3904TFR](https://www.flux.ai/adrian95/2n3904tfr~zdc), common ground, and MCU output capability verified as above.

Parts: Q1 2N3904TFR; R1 360 Ω, 5%; R2 47 kΩ base-to-emitter pull-down; relay coil rated for 5 V and 50 mA; flyback diode with adequate repetitive reverse-voltage and surge-current ratings.

**Connections:**

1. +5 V → relay coil → Q1 collector. Q1 emitter → ground.
2. MCU GPIO → R1 → Q1 base. R2 from base to emitter.
3. Diode anode → Q1 collector and diode cathode → +5 V.

The tested forced-beta point supports the 50 mA example; the relay contact load is electrically separate from the coil driver.

### Minimal PNP high-side reference

A PNP high-side stage switches the 12 V rail while an NPN isolates its base drive from 3.3 V GPIO logic.

**Assumptions:** 12 V load rail, 3.3 V MCU, load current selected only after checking the chosen PNP’s tested saturation point and package dissipation.

Parts: QP1 onsemi [2N3906TA](https://www.onsemi.com/pdf/datasheet/2n3906-d.pdf); QN1 a voltage-rated NPN such as onsemi 2N3904TFR; PNP base-emitter pull-up; series resistor between QP1 base and QN1 collector; MCU-to-QN1 base resistor; QN1 base-emitter pull-down; optional flyback diode if the load is inductive.

**Connections:**

1. QP1 emitter → +12 V, QP1 collector → switched output, and load → ground.
2. Pull-up from QP1 base to +12 V and QP1 base → series resistor → QN1 collector.
3. QN1 emitter → ground, MCU GPIO → base resistor → QN1 base, and pull-down from QN1 base to ground.
4. For an inductive load, diode anode → ground and cathode → switched output.

Calculate both base resistors from worst-case datasheet values; the onsemi 2N3906 saturation table uses a tested ratio of 10 at 10 mA and 50 mA.

## NPN vs PNP sensors at 24 V

“NPN sensor” and “PNP sensor” describe the direction of current at the sensor’s switched output, not necessarily the internal transistor. For example, an NPN sinking output needs a PLC input that supplies current, whereas a PNP sourcing output needs an input returning to 0 V/common. Follow the sensor and PLC manufacturer datasheets for wiring diagrams, thresholds, leakage, short-circuit, transient, and power-off specifications.

For isolated 24 V-to-3.3 V interfacing that keeps industrial wiring faults away from the MCU, one suitable topology is an optocoupler. With an NPN sensor, place the optocoupler LED and its rated series network from +24 V to the sensor output. With a PNP sensor, place the LED and series network from the sensor output to the sensor-side 0 V. On the 3.3 V MCU side, connect the optocoupler emitter to MCU ground and collector to a 3.3 V pull-up and GPIO. Size the LED network from the exact sensor’s on-state residual voltage and leakage, the optocoupler LED forward-voltage range and required current-transfer ratio, and resistor pulse/voltage ratings. Do not join industrial 0 V to MCU ground across the isolation boundary.

An open-collector output pulls low through a transistor and needs an external pull-up for high. An NPN open-collector sensor output may use a 3.3 V pull-up only when it is a verified bare/open collector with no internal pull-up, positive-rail clamp, or leakage path that can expose the MCU to the sensor rail, and its voltage rating and power-off state are confirmed. Direct wiring shares ground and is not galvanically isolated, meaning the circuits have a conductive connection. The optocoupler transfers the signal using light, so the grounds are not joined. Many 24 V sensors include internal diagnostics or leakage paths. A PNP source output must not connect to a GPIO directly; use a rated divider plus clamp and Schmitt receiver, an optocoupler, or a dedicated industrial input receiver.

## FAQ

### Is NPN better than PNP?

Neither is universally better. NPN suits simple ground-referenced low-side switching, whereas PNP is useful when the load must be switched from a positive rail.

### Can I replace an NPN transistor with a PNP transistor?

Not by swapping the device alone. Supply polarity, base drive, current direction, flyback diode orientation, and often the logic sense must change.

### Why is an NPN relay driver so common?

A ground-referenced MCU can source base current into the base of an NPN whose emitter is tied to ground without a high-side level shifter. The load stays connected to its supply, and the transistor completes the return path.

### What is the difference between an NPN and PNP proximity sensor?

An NPN proximity sensor output normally sinks current when active; a PNP output normally sources current. Confirm the exact sensor’s output circuit and match it to the PLC input common and threshold specifications.

### Can a 24 V NPN sensor connect directly to a 3.3 V MCU?

Only for a verified bare/open-collector output with no internal path to the 24 V rail, a shared reference, a safe local pull-up, and acceptable leakage and clamp behavior. Direct wiring is non-isolated. Otherwise, use a protected receiver or optocoupler, and never assume the word “NPN” makes the wire safe.

### How do gain-bin suffixes affect substitution?

Suffixes such as A, B, or C can define different `hFE` ranges, and packaging suffixes can identify different lead forms or shipping formats. The onsemi BC547BTA is a B-bin part, so family-wide headline gain ranges are insufficient to identify its exact gain classification. **The discontinued BC557BTA provides a historical PNP B-bin example, although its lifecycle status makes it unsuitable as a recommendation for a new design.**

### Are 2N3904 and BC547 pin-compatible?

Do not assume so. The onsemi BC547BTA uses collector-base-emitter pins 1-2-3, while transistor lead order can vary by manufacturer, package, and suffix. Verify the exact MPN’s datasheet and the Flux symbol-to-footprint mapping. **Flux’s** [schematic capture guide](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/schematic-capture-explained) **explains how component symbols and pin mappings fit into the PCB design workflow.**

## Sources and example parts

Pinouts and gain bins depend on the exact MPN, manufacturer, package and suffix. Verify every substituted device rather than generalizing from “2N3904,” “BC547,” or a schematic symbol.
