![How to Choose a Bluetooth Module for Your PCB Design](https://www.flux.ai/p/assets/blogs/how-to-choose-a-bluetooth-module/main.webp)

A Bluetooth module can provide PCB wireless connectivity without requiring you to design every part of the radio from scratch. Depending on the module, it may include a Bluetooth radio, processor, clock source, RF matching components, firmware, and an [integrated antenna](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/how-to-design-pcb-trace-antenna) all in one package.

The right choice for a Bluetooth module is not necessarily the module advertising the longest range or newest Bluetooth version. For example, a battery-powered sensor, wireless controller, and audio product have different needs. Before comparing modules, decide what data the product will exchange, how often it will communicate, what will power it, and where its antenna can sit in the finished enclosure. Those decisions narrow the field faster than a long feature list.

## What Is a Bluetooth Module?

A Bluetooth module is a packaged radio subsystem designed to be integrated into another product. Some Bluetooth modules provide a radio and processor on which you run your complete application. Others come with embedded Bluetooth firmware and accept commands from a separate host microcontroller. Many include an oscillator and RF matching network. Further, some modules include an antenna, while others expose an RF connection for an external antenna.

That makes a module different from a **chipset or bare wireless IC**. With a chip-down design (e.g., chipset), the design team typically is responsible for more of the supporting RF circuit, antenna implementation, layout, and validation.

Notably, a Bluetooth module is also different from a **development board**: a dev board may contain a Bluetooth module plus USB, regulators, buttons, and headers, but is primarily a tool for prototyping rather than a component intended to be soldered directly onto a final production PCB.

Bluetooth modules are included in sensors, wearables, controllers, smart-home equipment, and industrial products. In each case, ask whether the module will run the application software itself or act as a wireless peripheral for another processor. This choice determines how much processing capacity, memory, and I/O the Bluetooth module needs. For example, your device might need a separate microcontroller unit (MCU) for running more than just basic communication via the Bluetooth module.

A module’s antenna arrangement matters just as much. An integrated antenna can simplify the bill of materials, but the placement may constrain the entire board outline. An external-antenna version of the Bluetooth module gives you more freedom to position the radiating antenna, while adding connector, cable, RF-layout, and approval considerations.

## Bluetooth Classic vs Bluetooth Low Energy

Bluetooth offers two major radio options: **Bluetooth Classic** (BR/EDR) and **Bluetooth Low Energy** (LE or BLE). The [Bluetooth SIG’s technology overview](https://www.bluetooth.com/learn-about-bluetooth/tech-overview/) describes Classic as widely used for traditional wireless audio and point-to-point data, while LE is designed for very low-power operation and supports several communication topologies.

**Bluetooth Classic vs Bluetooth Low Energy Comparison**

| **Consideration** | **Bluetooth Classic** | **Bluetooth Low Energy** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Typical priority | Continuous links and established Classic profiles\\\* | Low-power communication and flexible device interactions |
| Power use | Often higher for comparable intermittent sensor use | Designed to support low-duty-cycle operation |
| Data exchange | Suitable for sustained links to other devices where the required profile\\\* is available | Well suited to short, periodic exchanges; capability depends on configuration |
| Connection behavior | Commonly maintains a point-to-point connection | Can connect, advertise, broadcast, or use other supported LE modes |
| Audio | Traditional Bluetooth audio uses Bluetooth Classic with the **A2DP** profile\\\* for stereo audio. | **LE Audio** uses LE, but requires specific supported features and profiles |
| Common examples | Legacy audio accessories and Classic-compatible equipment | Sensors, wearables, beacons, controls, and supported LE Audio products |

\\\*A Bluetooth profile defines how Bluetooth devices perform a function and communicate. For example, A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) defines how high-quality stereo audio is streamed between compatible Bluetooth devices.

For a battery-based sensor that reports a measurement periodically, BLE is often the first option to consider. For a product that must work with an existing Classic audio profile or established Classic accessory ecosystem, Classic (or a dual-mode module) may be necessary.

Do not assume that “BLE” means “no audio.” [LE Audio](https://www.bluetooth.com/learn-about-bluetooth/feature-enhancements/le-audio/) runs on Bluetooth LE, but both the module and the devices it communicates with must support the relevant audio features such as the LC3 codec and LE Audio profiles such as Basic Audio Profile (BAP). Similarly, “Bluetooth 5” on a product listing does not tell you which radio modes, profiles, or application features its firmware actually supports. To understand these parameters, check the module’s datasheet and software documentation.

Neither radio type guarantees a particular range. Antenna design, transmit power, receiver sensitivity, enclosure material, interference, and the installation environment all affect the actual performance of the Bluetooth link.

## What to Consider When Choosing a Bluetooth Module

Start by defining the scope of the **wireless job**. For example, does the product:

1. send a few bytes every minute,
2. maintain a responsive control connection, or
3. transmit audio?

Which phones, gateways, or accessories must recognize it?

Once you have the scope finalized, list the required Bluetooth radio mode, version, profiles, and software features you need. Only then should you start comparing module prices.

Then review the integration requirements:

- **Processing and firmware:** Does the module run the full application, or does it need a host? Are its processor, memory, SDK, examples, and update mechanism sufficient?
- **Interfaces:** Check the actual availability and pin assignments for wired communication protocols with the module on your device, including UART, [SPI](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/spi-vs-i2c), I²C, USB, GPIO, ADC, or other functions. A module may expose only a subset of the underlying chip’s interfaces.
- **Power:** Compare supply-voltage limits and active, connected-idle, advertising, and sleep current under realistic settings. A single “sleep current” figure will not predict battery life. Make sure to account for headroom as necessary.
- **RF performance:** Compare transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, antenna options, and any stated test conditions. Treat published range as a test result to investigate, not a promise for your enclosure.
- **Physical fit:** Check module dimensions, land pattern, antenna keepout region, operating-temperature range, and assembly method.
- **Production:** Review price at your expected volume, availability, lifecycle status, documentation quality, and whether a second source is feasible.

### Comparing Bluetooth Modules

An [ESP32-based module](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/esp32-pinout-everything-you-need-to-know), which integrates an ESP32 microcontroller with supporting components, may provide enough processing capability to run a moderately complex application while offering various peripheral interfaces. Such additional capability may be unnecessary for a simple application and can come with tradeoffs such as higher power consumption, greater complexity, or higher cost. In contrast, a simpler BLE module could be a better fit for a very small, low-duty-cycle sensor. There is no universally best choice.

A pre-approved Bluetooth radio module can reduce some integration work, but it does **not** automatically result in a finished product. The final device still needs to meet the conditions under which the module was approved.

Follow the module manufacturer’s approved antenna and installation requirements, because changes can affect the validity of the original approval. Confirm the regulatory obligations for each target market, since requirements differ by jurisdiction. Plan for end-product evaluation as well, because the complete device may need additional testing beyond the radio module itself.

Separately, the [Bluetooth SIG says products incorporating Bluetooth technology must complete its qualification process](https://www.bluetooth.com/develop-with-bluetooth/qualify/) before sale or distribution. This process is needed to show that the product’s Bluetooth implementation conforms to the applicable specifications and qualification requirements. Include this work in the project schedule rather than treating the module’s existing paperwork as the final compliance step.

Finally, compare **module versus chip-down** at the expected production volume.

- A module may cost more per unit but save RF design time, board iterations, and integration effort.
- A chip-down design may make sense when size, cost at scale, or a specialized antenna justifies the additional engineering and validation work.

Prototype both approaches only if such a trade-off could materially change the product.

## Bluetooth Module Circuit and Pinout Requirements

A typical Bluetooth module circuit starts with power, ground, and the manufacturer’s recommended [decoupling capacitors](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/decoupling-capacitors-pcb). From there, the connections depend on whether the module runs the application or communicates with a host microcontroller.

![Schematic of a Bluetooth module connection concept: a +3.3 V regulator feeds the module VDD pin with decoupling capacitors to ground. Host MCU TX connects to module RX, host RX to module TX, a host GPIO to RESET, and an optional host GPIO to STATUS. The module GND pin connects to ground. STATUS is used only if the selected module provides or requires this pin.](https://www.flux.ai/p/assets/blogs/how-to-choose-a-bluetooth-module/body-1.png)

Above, we’ve mocked up a **connection concept, not a universal pinout**. A UART-controlled module may have TX and RX pins; another may use SPI, USB, or an application-specific interface.

Further, the module may also need boot-mode pins, programming or debugging access, wake and status signals, or hardware flow control. If the module contains the application processor, the “Host MCU” in the diagram may not be needed at all.

When setting up the pinout, check logic-voltage compatibility on every connection. A 3.3 V module will not tolerate 5 V signals just because a development board using it accepts USB power. If an external crystal is required, follow the manufacturer’s specified part and placement guidance as many modules already contain the necessary clock source.

If the module has no integrated antenna, the circuit may include an RF pin or connector and a specified matching or feed arrangement. That is not a simple digital signal. The pin or connector carries an RF signal and needs a [controlled-impedance](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/pcb-impedance-control-guide) (typically 50 Ω) feed. As a result, make sure to carefully copy the manufacturer’s reference circuit and verify the required impedance, antenna type, and test provisions. For a design using a separate [STM32 microcontroller](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/stm32-things-you-need-to-know), for instance, choose the host interface and firmware architecture together with the wireless module so neither side is short of pins, memory, or development support.

## Bluetooth Module PCB Layout and Antenna Placement

A correct schematic cannot rescue a badly placed antenna. Begin with the module manufacturer’s land pattern and reference layout, then reserve the RF area before placing the rest of the components.

For an integrated-antenna module, the reference design may require the antenna end to sit at the PCB edge, with no copper, components, or ground beneath a defined keepout. Keepout dimensions and layer requirements are **module-specific**. Make sure not to copy a clearance from a different product or assume that all antennas want the same ground-plane arrangement.

Then, place switching regulators, high-speed traces, and other potential noise sources away from the antenna region.

Consider the final product, not only the bare PCB: batteries, displays, nearby boards, cables, and metal enclosures can alter antenna performance. If the design uses an external antenna, assess its connector, cable path, mounting location, and the RF feed required by the module supplier. [Texas Instruments’ Bluetooth-module layout guidance](https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru359e/swru359e.pdf) illustrates how antenna position, RF trace routing, reference ground, and enclosure proximity become part of the design.

When testing, make sure to preserve programming and test access too. A module that works on a development board can become difficult to bring up if the production PCB hides reset, UART, debug, or power-measurement points. Review the board with the enclosure model and manufacturing plan before committing the antenna area.

In Flux, you can search for candidate modules, compare their component data, and build the supporting circuit in the [schematic editor](https://www.flux.ai/p/pcb-design-software/schematic-capture). Check the selected part’s symbol, pinout, and footprint against its datasheet. Then apply the module’s land pattern and keepout requirements in the PCB layout and share the design for review. Use the manufacturer’s reference layout as the RF baseline. Then, use Flux to make the full circuit and board easier to inspect together.
