AI agents for hardware design turn a device goal into a plan, do the design work, check the results, and iterate. In Flux, that work covers electronics, mechanical design, firmware, simulation, and manufacturing. You see progress in chat and steer the work as it happens.

This is pretty much how Flux already works.

The agent doesn't just execute prompts. It plans, directs its own work, evaluates results, learns from mistakes, and iterates.

We've built an entire UX around this loop, giving users visibility and the ability to monitor, steer, and intervene as it happens.

The future of AI isn't better prompting...it's agents that can drive their own work, with humans steering what matters!

I wrote that because I see this every day building Flux. The important change isn't a clever way to phrase a request. It's a different way to work with an AI engineer.

You describe the device. Flux works through the design. You stay close to the decisions that matter.

## A goal is more useful than a perfect prompt

Hardware engineering isn't a sequence of isolated answers. It's a sequence of connected decisions. A connector changes the board edge. The board edge changes the enclosure. The enclosure changes where a person can reach the connector.

Consider an industrial inspection device. It needs a sensor interface, power electronics, firmware, and a housing that can be assembled and serviced. A beautiful schematic is not the finished device. Neither is a beautiful enclosure.

The useful starting point is the complete goal: what the device must do, where it must fit, how it gets power, and how it will be made. In Flux, you can give that goal to the agent and review its plan before asking it to continue.

That changes your job. Instead of writing the next instruction after every answer, you can focus on the product requirements and the engineering choices. Ask Flux to explain a trade-off. Change a requirement. Approve the direction and let the work move forward.

## The loop has to reach the physical device

A useful AI engineer works across the boundaries of the device. Flux designs the electronics and the mechanical parts in the same project. It writes firmware, runs simulations, and prepares manufacturing files.

For the inspection device, that means the board and the housing belong in the same conversation. Ask Flux to align the mounting holes, place the connector openings, and check component clearance. Ask it to change the enclosure wall or move a bracket. These are design decisions, not a separate handoff after the electronics are finished.

Picture the lip around a recessed connector. The plug must seat fully. The housing must leave room around it. The fastener next to it must still be reachable during assembly. Those physical details are the point of designing a complete device.

We wrote about this in [AI Is Collapsing CAD](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/ai-is-collapsing-cad). The disciplines still matter. The artificial walls between their tools don't.

## A result is the start of the next check

Generating a design isn't the whole job. It's the start of a feedback loop.

Flux checks its own work as it designs. It can run electrical rule checks and design rule checks, review the results, and fix the issues it finds. You can read the design-check results in the Review panel.

The same idea applies to the enclosure and its mounting parts. Ask Flux to check fit, clearance, and tool access. Ask it to analyze a bracket under the specified load. Change the geometry, run the analysis again, and compare the results.

Simulation makes the loop concrete. Flux can simulate circuit behavior and analyze temperature and airflow in an enclosure. You can ask it to explain the results, compare a design change, and update the project. A plot or a report becomes an input to the next engineering decision.

Firmware belongs in that loop too. Flux writes the source, builds it, and runs tests. When a build fails, it fixes the source or configuration and builds again. You get the output and build notes in the project.

That is how Flux learns from its mistakes: every check result improves the next attempt. Fix. Retry. Check again. The work moves forward through feedback, not through a growing stack of prompts.

## Visibility is part of the product

Autonomy isn't a reason to hide the work. It's a reason to make the work visible.

In Flux, you can follow messages, progress, and results in chat. You can see what changed, ask why, and inspect the checks. The conversation stays with the design work instead of living in a separate window with a pile of copied files.

That visibility gives you something useful to steer. If you want a different enclosure split, say so. If the connector belongs on the opposite side, send that instruction while Flux works. It reads the message at the next step and changes course. Earlier work stays in the project.

You can also stop the agent. Or tell it to stop after the schematic and show you the design before it continues. This is how an engineer should direct an AI colleague: set the goal, follow the work, and intervene when a decision needs your judgment.

## Keep the loop going through manufacturing

The device isn't finished when it looks right on screen. The board and the enclosure need manufacturing files. They need a review before ordering. They need quotes.

Flux prepares fabrication files and mechanical exports, checks manufacturing outputs, and gets quotes for the board and enclosure. You can review the design and ask for the files or prices you need in the same project.

This is why we build an AI hardware engineer, not a prompt box attached to a drawing tool. The goal is a complete device. We explored that connection in [Design Is the Easy Part. Flux Is Built for the Rest.](https://www.flux.ai/p/blog/design-is-the-easy-part)

Better wording isn't the destination. Better engineering work is. Give the agent a goal, make its progress visible, and keep people in control of what matters!

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are AI agents for hardware design?

AI agents for hardware design plan and perform engineering work, check results, and iterate. Flux applies that loop to electronics, mechanical design, firmware, simulation, and manufacturing in one project.

### Can I steer Flux while it works?

Yes. Send a message in chat while Flux works. It reads your instruction at the next step and changes course. You can also stop the agent or review its plan before asking it to continue.

### How does Flux check its design work?

Flux runs engineering checks and simulations, reviews results, and fixes issues. You can ask for ERC and DRC, mechanical fit checks, firmware builds and tests, and manufacturing-file checks.
