Architecture Decision Guide 1. Choosing Between 4S and 6S
A LiPo cell is about 3.7 V nominal, 4.2 V fully charged, and typically treated as depleted around 3.2–3.5 V under load.
For the same mechanical output power, raising voltage reduces current: P = V × I. A motor system needing 600 W from the battery would draw approximately 40.5 A at 14.8 V or 27 A at 22.2 V before losses. Lower current reduces connector loss, copper loss, and voltage drop because conductor heating follows I²R.
4S advantages
  • Lower voltage stress on MOSFETs, gate drivers, capacitors, TVS devices, and regulators.
  • Easier first ESC design and generally more forgiving switching behavior.
  • Wider selection of 25–30 V-rated components, although propulsion transients still require significant margin.

I documented the full comparison in Architecture Decision Guide. My recommendation is 4S for revision A, one dedicated STM32G0/G4-class controller per ESC, a connectorized regional ExpressLRS receiver, and an X-shaped central PCB with short ESC lobes mounted to a separate structural frame—not full-length FR-4 motor arms.
Next decisions are the operating country, drone/motor/propeller class, target current, and center-board mounting dimensions.

I’ll implement the recommended revision-A schematic: 4S input, 20 A continuous/30 A burst per motor, dual STM32 compute core, four independently controlled ESC channels, connectorized ExpressLRS/CRSF, sensors, protected power tree, USB data, and dual SWD. I’ll build and verify the complete schematic first, then stop for approval before the 8-layer X-shaped layout.
