AC to DC Converter Design

You want an AC-to-DC converter that outputs 5 V DC. I haven’t made any project changes yet.
For safety and reliability, I need a few details before designing it:
  1. AC input voltage: 120 VAC, 230 VAC, or something else?
  2. Output current needed: e.g. 500 mA, 1 A, 2 A, 3 A?
  3. Use case: powering a phone, microcontroller, LEDs, relay board, etc.?
  4. Isolation requirement: For mains AC, the design should use an isolated AC-DC power module or certified adapter-style supply, not a simple capacitive/dropper circuit.
  5. PCB or module-based? Do you want a PCB using a ready-made AC-DC module, or a full discrete power supply design?
Recommended beginner-safe architecture:
AC mains input → fuse/protection → isolated AC-DC 5 V module → output capacitor/filter → 5 V DC output connector
For a student/beginner project, I strongly recommend using a certified isolated module such as a small 5 V AC-DC converter module rated for your required current. Designing a discrete mains supply from scratch is dangerous and needs creepage/clearance, fuse sizing, thermal checks, and regulatory safety considerations.
What remains to be done once details are confirmed:
  • Select the correct isolated 5 V AC-DC module.
  • Add input fuse/protection and connector.
  • Add output filtering/decoupling.
  • Wire the schematic.
  • Run electrical review.
  • Then proceed to PCB layout only after schematic approval.
