Hybrid Smartwatch Design Inquiry

Enlarged the PCB from 40 mm circular to 42 mm circular on a 4-layer stackup. This keeps it within the 44 mm case target while improving density from critical to high.
Open items:
  • Routing is still tight, especially around the ESP32/RTC/regulator area.
  • A few passives may still need to move to the bottom layer for clean routing.
Suggested next steps:
  1. Spread the crowded ESP32/RTC/power components.
  2. Move low-profile passives to the bottom side.
  3. Run routing feasibility again before autorouting.
the esp doesnt fit
I’ll inspect the ESP32 module placement and board clearance, then move/orient it so the module body and antenna keepout fit within the enlarged round PCB/case constraints.
Fixed the ESP32 fit issue: U1 was protruding past the 42 mm circular board, so I moved it inward. It is now fully inside the PCB outline at approximately (0, 5 mm).
Open items:
  • Moving U1 inward created new routing congestion between U1, U5, J1, and J3.
  • The next placement pass should spread the motor driver/AMOLED connector area and possibly move small passives to the bottom side.
Suggested next steps:
  1. Re-place the crowded U1/U5/J1/J3 cluster.
  2. Move selected passives to the bottom layer.
  3. Run routing feasibility again.

Find round AMOLED/OLED display candidates that fit a 44 mm case while leaving room for a visible decorative bezel/ring inspired by the 007 First Light watch style. The display must also support a mechanical hand stack above the display, ideally with a small center cap hiding the shaft area.

Recommendation
Primary target: 1.32 inch QSPI AMOLED, 466×466, active Ø33.55 mm.
Why:
  • It leaves roughly 5.2 mm radial difference between the 44 mm case OD and the active display diameter before case wall/crystal/bezel allocation.
  • It is visually larger than 1.19–1.28 in displays but less risky than 1.39–1.43 in modules.
  • QSPI is more realistic for an ESP32-class design than raw MIPI DSI.
  • A 33.55 mm active display leaves enough dial center margin for a decorative cap and hands without making the screen look undersized.
Fallback target: 1.28 inch AMOLED, 416×416, active Ø32.45 mm.
Why:
  • Excellent mechanical clearance for a themed outer ring/bezel.
  • Very thin panel listings around 0.7 mm.
  • Good for a more analog-looking hybrid watch where the physical bezel and hands dominate.
  • Risk: many available versions are MIPI DSI, which complicates ESP32 integration.
Avoid as first choice:
  • 1.43 inch AMOLED unless the selected module outline is ≤40–41 mm and the case design allows very thin walls. Many 1.43 in modules are 44–45 mm square, which is too large for a 44 mm watch case.
  • Breakout-board style LCD modules for final wearable integration; they are useful for firmware prototyping but usually too mechanically bulky.

The actual usable margin is smaller than these values because the 44 mm dimension is the outside case diameter, not the internal display cavity.
ESP32 Interface Risk
  • ESP32 can comfortably drive SPI/QSPI displays.
  • Raw MIPI DSI AMOLED panels are harder; they may require a bridge IC, display controller module, or a different host processor with native DSI.
  • For schematic selection, prefer a display module explicitly offering QSPI/SPI command interface with available initialization commands and connector pinout.
Mechanical Hand Stack Notes
  • Do not require the display itself to have a large center hole; most AMOLED panels will not.
  • Use a small decorative center cap over the display to hide the shaft/coupling region.
  • The hand shaft should pass through the front mechanical stack; final feasibility depends on display construction, cover lens, spacer, and whether a small protected center clearance can be introduced without damaging active panel layers.
  • The safest prototype path is to mechanically offset the motor behind the display and transfer motion through a thin coaxial shaft or gear train, keeping only the shaft/cap visible above the dial.
