PCB-First vs Enclosure-First Design

Briefly describe what it's like to design a complete product in Flux. Help me understand what the PCB-first and enclosure-first design workflows are like to work with.
Designing a complete product in Flux means developing the electronics and mechanical parts together: defining requirements, building the schematic, laying out the PCB, designing the enclosure, and checking how everything fits before manufacturing.
  • PCB-first: Start with the circuit, connectors, and board layout, then shape the enclosure around them. This works well when electrical performance drives the design. The trade-off is that the finished product may be larger or less flexible in shape.
  • Enclosure-first: Start with the product’s size, shape, mounting, and user-facing controls, then fit the PCB inside. This works well when appearance or a tight space matters most. The trade-off is more constraints on component placement, routing, and cooling.
In practice, both workflows are iterative: establish the main constraints first, then check the board and enclosure together as they evolve. I haven’t changed your project this session; execution stopped because your ACUs ran out.
