Enclosure Build
Overview
Two-part matte-black ASA FDM enclosure for the 125 × 65 × 1.52 mm FJ Cruiser Dashboard Compass PCB. The approved redesign uses a restrained Rams-inspired industrial language: planar front and rear faces, rational rectangular proportions, consistent small radii, a flush service-lid seam, and no decorative controls or swooping surfaces. The base/front shell and removable rear lid share the PCB-top z=0 frame and are independently toggleable at ROOT (0,0,0).
Live assembly cleanup
  • The legacy dashboard-compass-enclosure-base.build123d and dashboard-compass-enclosure-rear-lid.build123d assets were deleted.
  • Their obsolete model nodes were disabled and their asset rules removed, so they no longer resolve or render in the live 3D assembly.
  • Exactly one base model, Enclosure Front/Base Shell, and one lid model, Enclosure Rear Lid, are enabled and resolved. Duplicate/stale enclosure model nodes are disabled.
  • Platform limitation: the two now-empty disabled Model nodes cannot be physically deleted by the available layout-node deletion API, which rejects Model-node UIDs. They remain as non-rendering orphan tree entries pending manual/platform deletion support.

Dashboard foot / pedestal
  • Continuous near-full-width plinth: 128 mm wide × 42 mm front-to-back × 20 mm high.
  • Product contact plane: y = -50 mm. The lowest exterior points are one coplanar rounded-rectangle landing surface; the center tape pocket is recessed from that plane, so the perimeter rim remains the sole flat landing datum without rocking points.
  • Tape pocket: 110 × 28 × 0.8 mm. It leaves a continuous 9 mm side rim and 7 mm front/rear rim and does not break through the 20 mm foot.
  • Foot-to-shell attachment: the plinth overlaps the shell by 6 mm vertically, across 128 mm width and the shell's full 20.92 mm front-to-back depth; it is one fused solid, not a tangent appendage.
  • Anti-tip rationale: 42 mm support depth gives 21 mm nominal half-span for an approximately 86 mm tall assembly, with the foot extending to z=-18/+24 mm around the enclosure depth. This broad plinth is intended to resist normal encoder push/rotation loads; final vehicle vibration and adhesive performance require physical validation.
Fit and clearance audit
  • Display body height is 8.5 mm; the front inner face at 10.5 mm provides 2.0 mm headroom.
  • Tallest identified bottom-side body is C16 at 5.4 mm. Lid inner face at z=-8.92 mm gives 2.0 mm clearance below the 1.52 mm PCB underside stack.
  • Four mounting axes are exactly (-57,+27), (+57,+27), (-57,-27), (+57,-27) mm. Front bosses and rear-lid standoffs are Ø7 mm and concentric with these holes.
  • Front bosses extend through the 2.8 mm front panel and the lid standoffs share their full circular section with the lid; both assets compile as one connected solid.
  • The PCB cavity follows the board's R5.5 corners with R6.0 geometry and retains 0.5 mm nominal edge clearance. The flush lid tongue locates inside this cavity rather than wrapping over the shell, keeping the exterior seam minimal.
  • Display windows follow the exact current layout body centers and clear the 22.047 × 41.097 mm bodies by approximately 1.98 mm horizontally and 1.95 mm vertically per side. They are simple through-openings with no inward masking lip.
  • The three enlarged windows retain consistent R1 corners and 7.0 mm equal bezel webs between adjacent displays. DS1 retains 6.5 mm to the inner left wall; all windows retain 10.5 mm to the inner top/bottom wall. The minimum opening-to-boss material is approximately 1.03 mm between DS1 and the nearest Ø7 mm left mounting boss; the geometries do not intersect.
  • The Ø20.0 mm encoder opening remains exactly centered at the SW1 datum (48,8) mm. The generated cylindrical cut is authored at radius 10.0 mm and therefore measures Ø20.0 mm. It is a simple through-opening with no inward lip, leaving 2.5 mm minimum panel web to DS3, 5.0 mm to the inner right wall (8.0 mm to the outer shell edge), and approximately 7.52 mm to the nearest Ø7 mm mounting-boss perimeter. The PCB-side rectangular encoder body remains behind the panel; the enlarged cut clears the interacting shaft/shoulder without moving SW1 or the PCB.
  • Opening/seam audit: all display and encoder cuts are confined to the front panel from z=10.2 mm through z=14.0 mm, well forward of the rear seam at z=-8.92 mm. No opening intersects the shell edge, another opening, a mounting boss, the PCB, or a neighboring component.
  • USB access is centered on J1's measured body region; the overmold pocket locally reduces wall reach while retaining the 1.2 mm FDM minimum.
  • Lower-right vents are localized at x=34,39,44,49 mm and avoid the left ESP32 antenna region and the LIS2MDL area.
  • Rear standoffs at y=±27 mm clear the bottom-side ESP32 body centered around y=0 and the display solder rows near y=±19.7 mm.
  • Lid bores and counterbores are cut after every union, skirt, vent, and branding subtraction, preventing later geometry from refilling the screw paths.
Branding verification
The rear deboss uses the exact official library SVG paths, not recreated text. The vector is mirrored across the YZ plane before subtraction because the exterior rear is viewed from negative Z looking toward positive Z; this makes Made with Flux read normally from the installed rear/outside viewpoint. The 0.60 mm recess leaves 2.20 mm wall and the lid geometry report remains one solid with no disconnected/sliver body.

Avoid carbon-steel hardware. Brass, nylon, or verified low-magnetic 316 hardware is preferred near the LIS2MDL and ESP32 antenna side.
Suggested ASA FDM settings
  • 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.20 mm layers, enclosed printer.
  • At least 7 perimeters to reproduce the nominal 2.8 mm walls; 6+ top/bottom layers.
  • 25–35% gyroid infill; denser local modifier around screw bosses if supported by the slicer.
  • Base orientation: print on the broad y=-50 mm plinth contact plane. The tape pocket faces the bed; bridge/support only the shallow pocket if the slicer requires it. Use a brim for ASA warp control.
  • Lid orientation: print exterior rear face upward to preserve the deboss; place the inner face/registration tongue toward the bed with support only where required by counterbores/standoffs.
  • Typical ASA starting range: 250–265 °C nozzle, 95–110 °C bed, slow enclosed cooldown; confirm against the selected filament/printer.
Assembly
  1. Print a screw-pilot coupon and tune the Ø2.7 mm pilot by approximately ±0.15 mm for the selected M3 thread-forming screw.
  2. Inspect the flat plinth landing rim, tape pocket, display windows, USB opening, vents, registration tongue and all screw bores.
  3. Place the PCB display-side toward the front panel and align all four mounting holes to the front bosses.
  4. Fit the lid tongue inside the shell cavity and ensure all four rear standoffs contact the PCB underside without rocking.
  5. Install the four nonmagnetic screws through the lid and PCB into the blind front bosses using light hand torque.
  6. Check display visibility, encoder rotation/press action and USB plug insertion before fitting the dashboard tape.
  7. Clean the tape pocket and dashboard with the adhesive manufacturer's approved process, apply tape inside the recessed area, and bond after a dry fit.
Fit QA
  • Both build123d sources compile.
  • Base and lid each report one connected solid.
  • Exactly one Enclosure Front/Base Shell node and one Enclosure Rear Lid node are active at ROOT (0,0,0), scale 1, Z-up, physical materials on, edges shown; duplicate/stale enclosure nodes are disabled.
  • Board cavity contains the 125 × 65 mm outline with 0.5 mm edge clearance.
  • Front and rear headroom satisfy the 2.0 mm requirement for the 8.5 mm displays and 5.4 mm bottom capacitor.
  • Display, encoder, USB, vent and mounting-hole coordinates are authored from the current layout.
  • Display openings are exactly 26 × 45 mm, R1, at the unchanged DS1/DS2/DS3 centers; encoder opening is exactly Ø20.0 mm at the unchanged SW1 center (48,8) mm.
  • Minimum webs are 7.0 mm between display windows, 2.5 mm between DS3 and the encoder cutout, 5.0 mm from the encoder cutout to the inner right wall, and approximately 1.03 mm from DS1 to the nearest mounting-boss perimeter. No cutout intersects the shell edge, rear seam, another opening, a boss, the PCB, or neighboring component geometry.
  • Rams-inspired revision audit: front interfaces remain exactly 26 × 45 mm R1 and Ø20.0 mm; USB, vents, bosses, plinth, tape pocket, PCB datum, headroom and hardware remain functionally unchanged. The rear lid is now flush at 132 × 72 mm with an internal registration tongue, and the base has a restrained 0.5 × 1.0 mm rear shadow line.
  • Both visible solids use reserved black plastic Color("#1c1c1c") and their active model nodes use physicalMaterials=true.
  • Screw through-bores and head counterbores are subtracted last.
  • Rear branding uses the official vector, is exterior-view mirrored, 0.60 mm deep and leaves 2.20 mm wall.
  • Plinth contact geometry is broad, continuous and coplanar; tape pocket retains a continuous rim.
  • First physical print: confirm knob envelope, unusually bulky USB cables, screw pilot torque, ASA warp, dashboard vibration and adhesive durability.
