Design Notes
9 V NE555 LED blinker
Goal: blink one red LED at about 1 Hz from a 9 V block battery using a hand-solder-friendly through-hole schematic.
Chosen parts
- Timer IC: LM555CN / NE555-compatible, PDIP-8
- Battery connector: 9 V battery snap, through-hole
- Switch: SPST through-hole rocker switch
- LED: 5 mm red through-hole LED
- Resistors: axial through-hole
- Capacitors: radial/disc through-hole
Timing values
- R1 = 10k
- R2 = 68k
- C1 = 10uF
Standard 555 astable frequency used:
- f = 1 / (0.693 x (RA + 2RB) x C)
Using RA = 10k, RB = 68k, C = 10uF gives approximately 0.988 Hz.
LED branch
- R3 = 470 ohm
- With 9 V supply and about 2 V red LED drop, LED current is approximately 15 mA.
Wiring summary
- Battery positive -> switch -> VCC rail
- Battery negative -> GND
- 555 reset tied to VCC
- R1 from VCC to DIS
- R2 from DIS to TR/THR node
- C1 from TR/THR node to GND
- Q output drives R3 then red LED to GND
- C2 = 100 nF decoupling from VCC to GND
Build intent
All selected footprints are through-hole or otherwise hand-solder friendly.
