Industrial Design Concept Sheet
Product Direction
A compact tabletop connected radio inspired by mid-century Braun/Dieter Rams proportions, updated for the IoT era.
Core Visual Intent
- Wood-look cabinet exterior
- Calm, architectural front face
- Two large front knobs
- Small centered display
- Hidden modern functionality behind a minimal analog-inspired composition
Target Exterior Size
- Width: 220 mm
- Height: 125 mm target
- Depth: 95 mm target
Front Elevation
- Overall front face centered and highly symmetrical
- Left knob and right knob aligned on a common horizontal centerline
- Small center display placed between knobs, slightly above knob centerline for visual hierarchy
- Speaker grille zones placed left and right of display/controls, or integrated as broader left/right acoustic fields depending on internal driver choice
- Soft edge radii and shallow bezel transitions preferred over sharp consumer-electronics styling
Side Profile
- Simple rectilinear volume with softened vertical edges
- Slight rear depth bias permitted to increase internal acoustic volume while preserving a slim frontal impression
- Front panel can be subtly inset from cabinet shell to create a framed object quality
- Rear panel reserved for power input, service access, and optional passive ventilation
Control Layout
- Left knob: source and navigation emphasis
- Right knob: volume and confirm/action emphasis
- Optional short-press and long-press behavior assigned in firmware rather than adding front-panel clutter
- Avoid additional front buttons unless essential
Display Window Size
- Small centered display window
- Initial target visible area: 55 mm to 70 mm wide
- Initial target visible area height: 18 mm to 28 mm
- Intended for track info, source, network state, battery state, and setup flows
- Display should remain visually subordinate to the cabinet and knobs
Speaker Grille Zones
- Reserve left and right front acoustic zones
- Initial grille zone target per side: 45 mm to 65 mm wide, 55 mm to 80 mm tall depending on driver strategy
- Grille pattern should be restrained and geometric
- Avoid oversized perforation fields that visually overpower the display
Battery and Internal Volume Assumptions
- Rechargeable battery included as an internal option for unplugged listening
- Intended unplugged runtime target: a few hours under moderate listening conditions
- Battery volume assumption: one protected single-cell lithium-ion pack or multi-cell equivalent subassembly mounted low and rear-biased for stability
- Internal layout should preserve a central electronics zone and protected acoustic chamber volume for speakers
- Internal free volume must support: main PCB, audio amplifier thermal margin, speaker cavity, battery, charging/power hardware, and antenna keep-out regions
Immediate Mechanical Assumptions
- Front knobs must have comfortable hand clearance from cabinet edges and display bezel
- Display window should be readable at tabletop viewing angles
- Battery placement should not compromise speaker acoustic volume excessively
- WiFi/Bluetooth antenna zones must be kept clear of dense metal features and large battery planes where possible
Open Decisions
- Final display technology and aspect ratio
- Single full-range speaker vs stereo left/right driver architecture
- Exact grille pattern language
- Final depth based on battery capacity and acoustic volume
