Smartwatch PCB Design Discussion

Proceed to PCB routing phase.
Priority order:
  1. RF routing (nRF → matching → antenna)
  2. QSPI display routing (short + controlled impedance)
  3. Power distribution routing (nPM1300 → rails)
  4. Sensor routing (I2C/SPI)
  5. Final DRC cleanup

Open items:

Final RF and Display Validation Before Routing
Scope
Final hardware corrections requested by the user:
  1. Finalize J2 24-pin 0.4 mm AMOLED + Touch + Power pinout.
  2. Fix nRF54LM20A RF design to use dedicated RF/ANT pad only.
  3. Re-run ERC/target checks for display and RF.
  4. Do not enter routing until RF and display are validated.
J2 Final Electrical Pinout
J2 is electrically finalized with the user-approved 24-pin AMOLED + Touch + Power map:
  • Pins 1, 2, 23, 24 and shield tabs: GND.
  • Pin 3: IOVCC → 3V3.
  • Pin 4: VBAT / VCI → VBAT.
  • Pin 5: QSPI_CLK → DISP_QSPI_CLK.
  • Pin 6: QSPI_CS → DISP_QSPI_CS.
  • Pin 7: QSPI_D0 → DISP_QSPI_D0.
  • Pin 8: QSPI_D1 → DISP_QSPI_D1.
  • Pin 9: QSPI_D2 → DISP_QSPI_D2.
  • Pin 10: QSPI_D3 → DISP_QSPI_D3.
  • Pin 11: RESET → DISP_RESET.
  • Pin 12: TE → DISP_TE.
  • Pin 13: BL_EN → DISP_BL_EN.
  • Pin 14: BL_PWM → DISP_BL_PWM.
  • Pin 15: TP_SCL → I2C1_SCL.
  • Pin 16: TP_SDA → I2C1_SDA.
  • Pin 17: TP_INT → TP_INT.
  • Pin 18: TP_RST → TP_RST.
  • Pin 19: TP_VCC → 3V3.
  • Pins 20–22: NC.
Mechanical caveat: current Flux library part is still a 24-pin 0.5 mm FPC footprint placeholder. The electrical pinout is finalized, but the exact 24-pin 0.4 mm footprint must be substituted before manufacturing.
RF Correction
RF was corrected from the old placeholder/GPIO assignment to the user-provided nRF54LM20A-QFN52 dedicated ANT pad:
  • MCU-side RF net: RF_FEED_MCU now connects only U1 pin 34 and L3 pin 1.
  • Antenna-side RF net: RF_FEED_50R connects L3 pin 2, C35/C36 pi-match nodes, and AE1 antenna feed.
  • U1 pin 50 was disconnected from RF.
  • RF path is now: U1 pin 34 dedicated ANT pad → L3 series matching element → RF_FEED_50R / C35 / C36 → AE1 antenna feed.
Validation Results
Targeted checks:
  • J2 keyword checks: no J2-specific ERC/footprint warnings found.
  • RF keyword checks: no RF-specific ERC/footprint warnings found.
  • Schematic net inspection confirms no floating display nets in the implemented J2 pinout.
  • Schematic net inspection confirms RF_FEED_MCU is only U1:34 ↔ L3:P1, and RF_FEED_50R is only matching network ↔ antenna feed.
Routing Gate
Routing remains blocked until the user approves RF and display placement/subsystem validation. No PCB routing was started in this step.
Remaining Manufacturing Caveats
  • Replace the J2 mechanical footprint with exact 24-pin 0.4 mm FPC connector footprint.
  • Replace the generic U1 placeholder with exact nRF54LM20A-QFN52 official symbol/land pattern when available.
  • Confirm RF keepout geometry around AE1 before routing.
